State Employee Appreciation Day at the Fair

Today is state employee appreciation day at the State Fair. You can exchange four cans of Food Lion brand food for an admission ticket. Be sure to stop by the Office of State Personnel and NC State Flex programs booth in the Kerr Scott Building. They’ll appreciate seeing you.

Wolfline buses will not serve stops for Centennial Biomedical Campus/College of Veterinary Medicine through Friday, due to heavy traffic at the adjacent fair. For details, visit http://www.ncsu.edu/wolfline. The Carter-Finley park and ride lot has been temporarily moved to the northwest corner of the current park and ride lot. The fair ends on Sunday. 

Guest Poet Patricia Smith

Meet award-winning poet Patricia Smith at 7:30 p.m. today in the Caldwell Hall lounge. Smith’s Teahouse of the Almighty was a National Poetry Series winner, the Best Poetry Book of 2006 on About.com, and a 2007 Hurston/Wright Legacy Award and Paterson Poetry Prize honoree. Her fifth book of poetry, Blood Dazzler, chronicles the human, physical and emotional toll of Hurricane Katrina.

Wolfpack Service Day

Join NC State alumni across the country who will volunteer in their communities on Saturday. Preregister to work at one of six sites in Wake County, and you’ll receive a T-shirt and lunch.

IBM Expert at Computer Security Day

Jeff Crume of IBM will deliver the keynote address for Computer Security Day on Monday. Faculty, staff and students are invited to hear Crume’s speech, “Secure Thinking,” and learn cybersecurity self-defense during the event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Talley Student Center.

Crume, a distinguished engineer and IT security architect for IBM's World Wide Tivoli Tiger Team, is the author of  Inside Internet Security: What Hackers Don't Want You To Know. He has written articles on cryptography, virtual private networking and identity management. Computer Security Day activities include general and technical discussions about social networking, current privacy issues in legislation, Web application security, antivirus protection, disk encryption, mobile device security, tools for desktop security, identity theft prevention, identity management and access control.  Shakespeare Scholar

Shakespeare scholar Russ McDonald will present his latest work at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27, in the Parks Shop Building, Room 210.  McDonald’s talk, titled “Shakespeare and the Suspicion of Style,” examines a turning away from rhetorical flash in 1595 in the context of Elizabethan architecture and music.

A professor of English at Goldsmiths College, University of London, McDonald recently began a term as vice president of the Shakespeare Association of America. His most recent book is Shakespeare's Late Style. His talk is sponsored by the English department and honors program.

Talk on Organized Labor Issues

Bill Fletcher, an activist and author on labor and race in the United States, will speak on “Challenges Facing Organized Labor in the Great Recession,” at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29, in Withers Hall 331. The history department is sponsoring his presentation.

Fletcher is executive editor of The Black Commentator and founder of the Center for Labor Renewal. He served as president of TransAfrica Forum, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to organizing, educating and advocating for policies in favor of the peoples of Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America. Fletcher is also a founder of the Black Radical Congress and a senior scholar for the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C. A past vice president for International Trade Union Development Programs for the George Meany Center of the AFL-CIO, he co-authored Solidarity Divided: The Crisis in Organized Labor and a New Path Toward Social Justice.

NCSU Wind Ensemble: Voodoo

Join the Wind Ensemble for some musical voodoo at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Stewart Theatre. Under the direction of Dr. Paul Garcia, the ensemble will perform works by Daniel Bukvich, Malcolm Arnold, Mikhail Glinka and Tchaikovsky. For ticket information, visit  http://www.ncsu.edu/music.

NCSU Pipes and Drums

The rousing sounds of Highland pipes, Scottish drums and big bands playing traditional Scottish tunes will highlight a pipes and drums performance at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Stewart Theatre. Smaller ensembles will play contemporary music. For ticket information, visit http://www.ncsu.edu/music.

Metaphysics Lecture

Philosophy Professor Kit Fine with New York University and the National Humanities Center will present a metaphysics lecture at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29, in Withers Hall 344. The presentation is part of the NC State Philosophy Colloquium Series.

Parks Microbiology Lecture

Dr. Nicholas Ornston of Yale University will present the Department of Microbiology’s fifth annual Leo W. Parks Distinguished Lecture at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, in Gardner Hall 3503. Ornston, a professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology, will discuss using natural transformation to explore sources of bacterial diversity. Light refreshments will be served after the presentation.
