Talk on Organized Labor Issues

Bill Fletcher, an activist and author on labor and race in the United States, will speak on “Challenges Facing Organized Labor in the Great Recession,” at 3 p.m. today in Withers Hall 331. The history department is sponsoring his presentation.

Fletcher is executive editor of The Black Commentator and founder of the Center for Labor Renewal. He served as president of TransAfrica Forum, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to organizing, educating and advocating for policies in favor of the peoples of Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America. Fletcher is also a founder of the Black Radical Congress and a senior scholar for the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C. A past vice president for International Trade Union Development Programs for the George Meany Center of the AFL-CIO, he co-authored Solidarity Divided: The Crisis in Organized Labor and a New Path Toward Social Justice.

Vet Library Open House

Metaphysics Lecture

Philosophy Professor Kit Fine with New York University and the National Humanities Center will present a metaphysics lecture at 4:30 p.m. today in Withers Hall 344. The presentation is part of the NC State Philosophy Colloquium Series.

BioSciences Forum

For an inside look at issues facing the fast-moving bioscience industries, attend the free BioSciences Forum on Friday at the North Carolina Biotechnology Center in Research Triangle Park. The BioSciences Management Initiative at the NC State College of Management presents the forum to provide an opportunity for open discussion of management issues in biotechnology and biosciences industries.

Featured presenters at this year’s forum are:

  • Michael Luther, president, David H. Murdoch Research Institute
  • William N. Starling, chief executive officer, Synecor LLC
  • Dr. Fred van Eenennaam, professor of strategy and dynamics of strategy at Universiteit Nyenrode, Nyenrode Business Universiteit, Breukelen, the Netherlands
  • Dr. Richard Kouri, professor and executive director of the Biosciences Management Initiative, NC State

Halloween and Hillsborough

To ensure campus safety and security, university parking lots and decks adjacent to Hillsborough Street will be staffed and require an NCSU parking permit and/or campus identification (student/faculty/staff ID) starting at 6 p.m. on  Saturday, Oct. 31.

Wolfprowl, Werewolf and Route 2 (North Campus Reverse) bus routes will run normal service. However, please check the TVS system at http://ncsu.transloc.com for real-time bus locations as there may be schedule delays due to increased Hillsborough Street vehicle and pedestrian traffic related to Halloween celebrations. Keep your game sharp during colder weather with  six weeks of group lessons at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course

Twilight Golf

Lonnie Poole Golf Course’s Twilight League is offering six weeks of group golf lessons to keep your game sharp during colder weather. The league meets weekly for an hourlong group lesson and warm-up with a PGA professional, followed by nine holes of twilight golf. Weekly prizes will be offered for proximity, and players who participate for at least four weeks earn eligibility for grand prizes.

To join, pay a one-time registration fee of $40 by Monday, Nov. 2, the first day of Twilight League golf. Each week’s session costs $45 per person, due on the day of play. Parks Microbiology Lecture

Dr. Nicholas Ornston of Yale University will present the Department of Microbiology’s fifth annual Leo W. Parks Distinguished Lecture at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, in Gardner Hall 3503. Ornston, a professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology, will discuss using natural transformation to explore sources of bacterial diversity. Light refreshments will be served after the presentation.

Darwin’s Letters on Stage

NC State’s University Theatre will present “Re: Design,” featuring the letters of Charles Darwin, from Wednesday, Nov. 4, to Sunday, Nov. 8, in the new Kennedy-McIlwee Studio Theatre. The Wednesday production is at 7 p.m. with a discussion following the show. Natural Learning Design Institute

To learn more about designing, building and using natural play environments for children, attend a design institute from Thursday, Nov. 5, through Saturday, Nov. 7, at the North Carolina Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill.

The institute’s goal is to raise awareness about the role of the outdoors for healthy development and to offer ideas that participants can implement back at home. The event will include presentations, discussions and interactive outdoor, hands-on activities. Landscape architects, designers, public health professionals, childcare providers, extension agents, master gardeners and  parks and recreation professionals are invited welcome to attend. Sustainable Agriculture Speaker

Will Allen, founder and CEO of Growing Power Inc., will give the Center for Environmental Farming Systems’ 2009 Sustainable Agriculture Lecture at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 9, at the McKimmon Center. Allen, recipient of a 2008 MacArthur fellowship, commonly called a “genius grant,” is known for urban farming initiatives in Milwaukee and Chicago. He was recently featured in the movie Fresh.

Allen will also speak in Goldsboro, home of the Center for Environmental Farming Systems. For more information about the day’s events, visit the CEFS Web site.

Victorian-Era Parenting

Eileen Gillooly, associate faculty member in English and women’s studies at Columbia University, will give a talk titled “Anxious Affection: Parental Feeling in 19th Century Middle-Class Britain” at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10, in Winston Hall 001.

Gilllooly, associate director of the Heyman Center for the Humanities, has had essays and reviews published in The New York Times Book Review and in a number of collections and journals, including Victorian Studies and Feminist Studies. She is the author of Smile of Discontent: Humor, Gender, and Nineteenth-Century British Fiction and co-editor of Victorian Prism: Refractions of the Crystal Palace and Contemporary Dickens.
