Missile Defense Director to Speak

The director of the Missile Defense Agency, Lt. Gen.  Patrick O'Reilly, will give a briefing about his agency and discuss employment opportunities at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20, in the Talley Student Center ballroom. Help for Haiti

A group of students and faculty, led by student body president Jim Ceresnak, plans to raise funds to support Stop Hunger Now, which is coordinating much-needed aid for Haiti. Preliminary plans call for students to collect donations at basketball games on Saturday (Clemson) and Wednesday (Duke). Stay tuned for details.

Integrating Social Science and Humanities in Research

Today is the deadline to RSVP for a “Meet the Researchers” presentation next week with Dr. Walt Wolfram, professor of English. Wolfram will discuss both the theoretical and practical dimensions of integrating science and humanities in research at noon on Thursday, Jan. 21, in Withers Hall, Room 331. Wolfram uses the role of language variation in society as his exemplar, but the implications of his model for research apply to many fields in the social sciences and humanities. Ethics Speaker

The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies invites you to hear Rüdiger Bittner of the University of Bielefeld and the National Humanities Center at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21, in Withers Hall, Room 344. His talk is titled "Some Naturalisms in Ethics." All are welcome.

Jazz with the John Brown Quintet

Hear the John Brown Quintet bring new life to classics from the Great American Songbook at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 22, in the Titmus Theatre. This award-winning jazz ensemble specializes in music from the time-honored bebop and hard bop eras of jazz. John Brown serves as a professor and director of the jazz program at Duke University.

DELTA Spring Workshops and Seminars

Registration for DELTA’s spring workshops and seminars is now open to faculty, staff and graduate students. Spring classes start on Tuesday, Jan. 26, and continue through April 29. During this time, DELTA is offering more than 75 classes, including a new Moodle Express workshop. New seminars include "Showcasing Large Course Redesign," "Teaching Strategies for Online Group Work" and "Life After Vista: An LMS Update for Faculty." Responding to a Data Tsunami

Keith Collins, senior vice president and CTO of SAS Institute, will deliver a talk titled "How do you respond to a data tsunami?" at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28, in Engineering Building III, Room 1231. His presentation is part of the Fidelity Investments "Leadership in Technology" Executive Speaker Series, launched in 2007 for the computer science department’s 40th anniversary. Expand Your Horizons Seeks Volunteers

The "Expand Your Horizons" career conference on Wednesday, March 17, is designed to increase young women's interest in mathematics, science and engineering by introducing seventh grade girls from North Carolina to successful role models in science, engineering and mathematics. The Science House at NC State is now seeking professional women in the Research Triangle area to volunteer to foster awareness of career opportunities for women in STEM related fields. College of Management Career Fair

The College of Management career fair, scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 4, is an excellent way for employers to connect with undergraduate students majoring in business administration, accounting, and economics, as well as graduate students from our MBA, MAC, and economics programs. 

The early registration fee is $400 for corporations and $150 for nonprofits through Jan. 14; then the fee increases by $50 per booth. Included in the price is booth space with pipe and drape, parking, continental breakfast, lunch, snacks and refreshments for two recruiters. To register go to http://www.ncsu.edu/epack/employer.

25th Annual Emerging Issues Forum

Run/Walk Club

Start the new year on the right foot, then the left, then the right, and then pick up the pace. If you would like to walk, jog, run or a little of all three with a group of folks just like yourself, come out on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:45 a.m. to run/jog/walk around Centennial Campus. All levels are encouraged to participate. No one gets left behind. Meet at the corner of Varsity Drive and Main Campus Drive, nearest to the Venture III Building.
