American Foreign Policy

Hear an assessment of U.S. foreign policy from a former United Nations assistant secretary general at 4 p.m. on Friday in D.H. Hill Library, EC 2304. Stephen J. Stedman, a former special advisor to the UN secretary general, will give a talk titled “American Foreign Policy: Yes We Can or No We Can’t?” The event is cosponsored by NC State’s School of Public and International Affairs and Department of Nuclear Engineering, and Duke University's Program in American Grand Strategy.

Women Making Strides in Sport

Dr. Shawn Ladda, president of the National Association of Girls and Women in Sport, will give the keynote speech, “From High Heels to Sneakers: Women Making Strides in Sport" for NC State’s Sisterhood Dinner at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 4 in the Talley Student Center ballroom. Faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to attend the event, which is sponsored by the Council on the Status of Women, NC State Women's Center and the Office for Diversity and Inclusion. Friday is the deadline to reserve tickets, which cost $20.

Jazz with the John Brown Quintet

Hear the John Brown Quintet bring new life to classics from the Great American Songbook at 8 p.m. Friday in the Titmus Theatre. This award-winning jazz ensemble specializes in music from the time-honored bebop and hard bop eras of jazz. John Brown directs the jazz program at Duke University.

DELTA Spring Workshops and Seminars

Registration for DELTA’s spring workshops and seminars is now open to faculty, staff and graduate students. Spring classes start on Tuesday and continue through April 29. During this time, DELTA is offering more than 75 classes, including a new Moodle Express workshop. New seminars include "Showcasing Large Course Redesign," "Teaching Strategies for Online Group Work" and "Life After Vista: An LMS Update for Faculty." Campus Rec Launches Employee Wellness Program

Worried about the rising costs of healthcare? Concerned about your BMI and what it means for insurance hikes? Campus Recreation can help. Pack Wellness is an employee wellness program designed just for you. This 12-week program offers weekly exercise and a number of health screenings that are all facilitated by national certified instructors and personal trainers, including BMI, waist to hip ratio, body fat, and blood pressure evaluations. Also included in the program is a weekly food diary analysis and information on multiple wellness topics.

The program starts Feb. 2. Participants must be a Carmichael Complex Member. Cost of the program is $60. Visit the fitness suite on the second floor of the Carmichael Recreation Center for details.

Graphic Design Symposium

The Biennial Graduate Symposium will be held in the College of Design Jan. 22-23, featuring nearly 100 graphic design graduate students from more than a dozen universities. Some well-known industry and academic leaders are on the program, including Brenda Laurel of the California College of the Arts, Elliott Earls of Cranbrook Academy, Kali Nikitas of the Otis College of Art and Design and Michael Longford of York University. There also will be video clips that students have made, featuring interviews with other academics and practitioners who are unable to attend. Retirement Reception for Earl Pulliam

A reception honoring Earl Pulliam, director of contracts and grants, will be held on Thursday, Jan. 28, from 3 p.m to 4:30 p.m. in the Joyner Visitor Center multipurpose room. Pulliam is retiring after more than 27 years of service to the university.

From the Landfill to the Landscape

University Dining is taking its first step toward composting by teaming with the Office of Waste Reduction to conduct a waste audit of one of Fountain Dining Hall's dumpsters to get an idea of how much compost is produced at NC State on an average day. Volunteers are needed for the audit, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 27. For more information, or to sign up, please send an e-mail to recycling@ncsu.edu. Play Raises Awareness and Funds

The Friends of the NC State Women’s Center presents a benefit production of Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 17 and 18, in the Witherspoon Campus Cinema. The production marks V Day, a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. Proceeds from ticket and merchandise sales will go to the Friends of the Women’s Center Fund, an NCSU Foundation fund, and will benefit interpersonal violence services provided by the NC State Women’s Center, InterAct, the North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and this year’s V-Day Spotlight: Stop Raping our Greatest Resource, a campaign initiated by the women of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Responding to a Data Tsunami

Keith Collins, senior vice president and CTO of SAS Institute, will deliver a talk titled "How do you respond to a data tsunami?" at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28, in Engineering Building III, Room 1231. His presentation is part of the Fidelity Investments "Leadership in Technology" Executive Speaker Series, launched in 2007 for the computer science department’s 40th anniversary. Expand Your Horizons Seeks Volunteers

The "Expand Your Horizons" career conference on Wednesday, March 17, is designed to increase young women's interest in mathematics, science and engineering by introducing seventh grade girls from North Carolina to successful role models in science, engineering and mathematics. The Science House at NC State is now seeking professional women in the Research Triangle area to volunteer to foster awareness of career opportunities for women in STEM related fields. Run/Walk Club

Start the new year on the right foot, then the left, then the right, and then pick up the pace. If you would like to walk, jog, run or a little of all three with a group of folks just like yourself, come out on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:45 a.m. to run/jog/walk around Centennial Campus. All levels are encouraged to participate. No one gets left behind. Meet at the corner of Varsity Drive and Main Campus Drive, nearest to the Venture III Building.
