See to Head Animal Science Department
Dr. M. Todd See has been named head of the animal science department in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. A professor in the department since 2004, See had served as interim department head since July 2008. See has provided statewide, national and international leadership for swine extension programs, with a primary focus on swine genetics and production management. He has served as the swine commodity coordinator for the animal science department since 1998. He currently serves as the liaison between NC State University and many commodity groups, including the North Carolina Pork Council, National Swine Improvement Federation, National Pork Board, National Pork Producers Council and National Swine Registry.
His numerous honors include the Outstanding Extension Service Award, Lois G. Britt Service Award to the N.C. Pork Industry, National Swine Improvement Federation Distinguished Service Award and National Pork Board Fellowship. He has been inducted into NC State's Academy of Outstanding Faculty Engaged in Extension.
Philanthropy Journal Joins Institute
The Institute for Nonprofits is incorporating the nationally recognized Philanthropy Journal as its newest program, effective this month. The move helps the Journal and the institute move forward on their shared goal of fostering effective nonprofit leadership and management. The Journal is a free online news source with approximately 13,000 subscribers to its e-mail newsletter.
Institute Has Grants For Doctoral Students
NC State's Institute for Nonprofits will provide competitive awards of up to $1,500 to doctoral students conducting research on or related to nonprofit organizations or non-governmental organizations. Proposals are due on Feb. 8; awards are expected to be announced by March 17. For complete details, go to http://nonprofit.chass.ncsu.edu/research/studentresearchawardapp.php.
An optional information meeting will be held Jan. 22, from noon to 1:30 p.m., at 219 Oberlin Road, near NC State's central campus. Members of the institute's Research Committee will be on hand to answer questions about the proposal requirements and process and about the kinds of research that are seen as relevant. Harris Wins Conservation Award
Nyeema Harris, Ph.D. candidate in the Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences Program, will be presented with the Emerging Conservation Leader Award at the Philadelphia Zoo Global Conservation Gala on March 18. Now studying carnivore/parasite population dynamics for her dissertation, Nyeema began her passion for wildlife conservation during an apprenticeship at the zoo.
Conduct Education Required
Effective Jan. 4, the National Science Foundation requires education in the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) for all undergraduate and graduate students and postdocs funded by its grants. For additional information, contact rcr_administrator@ncsu.edu.
