Have a Heart Campus Food Drive
Share a can of stew, a jar of peanut butter or a bag of pasta this week to help the hungry. Drop off your “Have a Heart” donations for the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina by Friday, Feb. 12, at the main collection site in Talley Student Center. Campus employees statewide are collecting food for the event, which is coordinated by the University of North Carolina Staff Assembly. Questions? Howl for Haiti Benefit Concert
NC State’s Howl for Haiti campaign is holding a benefit concert at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 15, in Witherspoon Cinema. Groups performing include Fusion, Packabells, Grains of Time and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Tickets are $7. T-shirts will be available for $10. The event is sponsored by the University Activities Board and Center for Student Leadership, Ethics and Public Service.
Guest Author Dorothy Allison
Dorothy Allison, author of Bastard Out of Carolina, Cavedweller, Trash and Two or Three Things I Know for Sure will speak at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 16, in the Caldwell Hall lounge as part of the creative writing program’s Owen/Walters Reading Series. Allison, the McGee Professor of Writing at Davidson University in Davidson, N.C., is also a poet, essayist and cultural commentator. She received mainstream recognition for the novel Bastard Out of Carolina, a finalist for the 1992 National Book Award. Cavedweller, published in 1998, became a national bestseller, New York Times Notable Book of the yYar, finalist for the Lillian Smith prize and American Library Association prize winner. She was awarded the 2007 Robert Penn Warren Award for Fiction. Her latest novel is titled She Who.
Campus Farmers Market
The Campus Farmers Market is back, and it’s twice as big. Visit the Brickyard from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 17, to check out the peanut butter, fresh salsa, artisan pastas and grits. Deadline for Extension Awards
It's time to submit material from your college or unit for the 2008-09 Outstanding Extension Service Awards. Submissions must be sent to the vice chancellor for extension, engagement and economic development by Thursday, Feb. 18. Diversity Film Series: Part II
The Staff Senate Diversity Committee will be showing the remainder of the film "What's Race Got To Do With It?" at 12:15 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19, in the Monteith Engineering Research Center, Room 313. The film chronicles the journey of a diverse group of students participating in a 15-week intergroup dialogue program at U.C. Berkeley. Those who are unable to come to the viewing site can take part via the DELTA mediasite link. You will need your unity ID and password to access the site. Polar Plunge and 5K for Special Olympics
We double dog dare you to dive into the chilly waters of Lake Raleigh in the Campus Police Department’s Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics. Gather your co-workers and friends for the wintry leap at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20, on Centennial Campus. Those who are less adventurous but more athletic can tackle the 5K run, which begins at 9 a.m. Costumes are encouraged. Campus MovieFest
Mark your calendars for Campus MovieFest, an annual competition that provides students with equipment and technical assistance to make short videos. Winners will be announced at the campus cinema in the Witherspoon Student Center on the evening of Sunday, Feb. 21. The event is sponsored by the Union Activities Board, Housing, the IRB, DELTA, and the NCSU Libraries. Plastic Fantastic Author
Eugenie Samuel Reich, author of Plastic Fantastic: How the Biggest Fraud in Physics Shook the Scientific World, will speak at 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22, in Riddick Hall, Room 301. In a talk titled “Fraud, Fabrication, and Publication: A Case Study of Deception in Physics,” she will discuss Jan Hendrik Schön, a star employee for Bell Labs until his extensive research misconduct was uncovered in 2002. The Society of Research Administrators has recommended Plastic Fantastic as a starting point for conversations about responsible conduct of research. This event is co-sponsored by the Graduate School’s Responsible Conduct of Research program and the Department of Physics. Registration is required at https://gsoars.acsad.ncsu.edu/pds.
Hold On To Your Hats
Once upon a time (and perhaps even now), what you wore on your head said as much about you as your clothes, shoes or hairstyle. Check out more than 150 hats – including seagull headgear and a traditional NC State beanie – during the “Hold onto Your Hats” exhibit in the D. H. Hill Special Collections Gallery. The exhibit, on display through June 6, is sponsored by the NC State libraries and the Gregg Museum of Art & Design.
