3rd Annual Benefit Gala
The evening begins at 7:30 with heavy hors d ’oeuvres and a silent auction. A brief program at 8:30 will feature presentations on the Gala benefit agencies and will highlight the reunion classes. Music and dancing will follow.
In keeping with the challenge to ‘Think Globally, Act Locally” the Fellows have selected two health care initiatives as the beneficiaries of this year’s Gala silent auction.
The Open Door Clinic of Wake County addresses health care for uninsured and indigent people by providing comprehensive medical, pharmacy, and ancillary care at no charge to patients. Free care provided from physicians, nurses, pharmacists, lab techs, interpreters, receptionists and screeners, total in value more than $235,400 a year. A significant number of Caldwell Fellows have been part of this volunteer force. One of our long-term clinic volunteers, Caldwell senior Carol Akers, has helped identify a specific target for the funds raised at the Gala. Flu Shots are a vital service provided by Open Door. $2400 raised at the Gala will purchase 200 doses of flu vaccine for fall 2008.
Tholulwazi Uzivikele is currently home for Caldwell Alumna Brice Nielsen (06) and her husband Jim Lefler who serve as Program Coordinators of this South African NGO. Tholulwazi Uzivikele (which means "Get Information to Protect Yourself" in Zulu). Tholulwazi is located in an area of need in upper Kwa-Zulu Natal, where the general population suffers from extreme poverty, 70% unemployment, and one of the highest HIV infection rates in the world. To face these challenges, Tholulwazi has developed three main programs: Home Based Care, Orphan Care, and Young Adult Care. These programs seek to increase the quality of life of patients living with and dying from AIDS, to look after the children left in the wake of the HIV epidemic, and to give youth a vision to change the world around them. The goal of the Caldwell Fellows Benefit Gala is to raise money for Orphan Fun Days. As Brice says, “The children we work with have rarely been outside their village community, as few families have cars or money to travel. Thus, Tholulwazi wants to take these deserving kids for fun days out to Game Parks to learn about animals and to the beach to see marine wildlife. We cannot take away the painful memories these orphans have endured, but we can help create happy memories filled with laughter, caring, and friendship. Please help us restore hope and bring light into these children's lives.”
The Gala student planning committee is currently seeking donations for the Silent Auction. Donations of meals, services, art and jewelry, and vacation sites have been highly successful in the past as auction items. Silent Auction donations made to The Caldwell Fellows are tax-deductible. Questions regarding Silent Auction donations may be directed to Maggie Smith of the planning committee at: mhsmith@ncsu.edu or to The Caldwell Fellows office at janice_odom@ncsu.edu or 515-3837.
Ticket prices for the Gala evening are $25.00 per person for students (undergraduate and graduate) and $40.00 for non-students. Tickets and may be purchased on-line through the Alumni Association.
