Alumni Association Board of Directors Donate to Caldwell Fellows

In a Jan. 15 meeting, the NC State Alumni Association Board of Directors voted to support The Caldwell Fellows program with personal gifts. The economic downtown's impact on the program has been dramatic. To compensate for some of the loss, board members agreed to reach into their pockets to provide financial backing. In a motion that passed unanimously, the board decided to require existing and incoming members to make a $1,000 contribution, if possible, on a annual basis to the scholarship program. There are 29 members of the board.

"We understand if some of our younger board members and senior class representative cannot give $1,000 at this time in their lives," says Board President Dennis Howard. "At the same time, we’d be happy to accept more that $1,000 from those who can afford it."

The current projected size of the incoming class to be selected at the end of February, is 12 students. We are hopeful that donations can yield a larger incoming class. If you would like to make a contribution, you can donate online or contact Cathy Rackley, director of Caldwell Fellows Development, at 919-515-0525, 800-627-2586 or cathy_rackley@ncsu.edu.

Sara Yasin

Sara Yasin named recipient of NC State's prestigious Mathews Medal

The Mathews Medal is designed to honor students who have shown dedication and devotion to the enhancement of the campus community during their tenure as undergraduate students at NC State. It is modeled after the Watauga Medal which honors alumni who have made significant contributions to the advancement of North Carolina State University. The Mathews Medal is named for Walter J. Mathews, the first student enrolled at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1889. Through this namesake, Walter J. Mathews represents a student’s desire to attend NC State University, to contribute to its well-being and to leave a legacy on our campus. Mathews continued his contributions to the university as an active alumnus, and this award serves to promote to the student body that same interest in their alma mater after graduation.

The Mathews Medal is awarded to up to four students in one academic year, and this year Sara Yasin is one of the distinguished recipients. Last year, another Caldwell Fellow, Kate Luckadoo '08, received the Medal.
