Informational Interviews
Interested in learning first-hand what it's like to work in a particular career or organization? Conduct an informational interview -- talk with a professional who works in the field.
Step 1: find a professional
Ask friends, family, faculty, and classmates, “Do you know anyone who works in the field of civil engineering?" Use employer databases found on the UCC website such as ePACK, eLeads, and Career Search to help you find a professional.
Step 2: contact a professional
Contact a professional by email or phone. Introduce yourself and let them know why you are calling.
"Hello, this is Jim Edwards. I am a first year student at NC State and considering a major in civil engineering. lWould you be willing to meet with me briefly so that I can better understand a typical day of a civil engineer? 30 minutes would be great on a day convenient for your schedule."
Step 3: conduct the interview
Conduct the interview professionally. Arrive 5-10 minutes early, dress in business casual, bring a list of questions, take paper and pen for notetaking, and bring your enthusiasm.
- What do you do on a typical day?
- Can you tell me about one of your current projects?
- What are your typical hours or work schedule?
- What are the rewards and challenges in this career?
- What training or education is required?
- Is a graduate degree recommended?
- What is a typical salary for someone in this field?
- What personal qualities are important for success in this field?
- What was your career path; what steps did you take to reach this position?
- How did you know what you wanted to do?
- What advice would you give to a student preparing for this field?
- When you hire a new graduate, what do you look for?
- Does your company hire summer interns or co-ops?
- Is there anyone else you think I should talk to about civil engineering careers?
Step 4: show your appreciation
Email or send a thank you note within 24 hours. Report back to that person on anything you pursue as a result of your meeting. They will appreciate knowing the impact they have made on your career.
An informational interview has the potential to yield both short-term and long-term benefits.
Short term -- gain information and insights that can help you focus your career direction.
Long term -- establish an important contact in your field for the future.
