Equally comfortable in the worlds of hip-hop and jazz, Durham-based quartet The Beast is fronted by the poetic man with mic, emcee Pierce Freelon. He’s joined by keyboardist Eric Hirsh, bassist Peter Kimosh, and drummer Stephen Coffman in creating genre-bending improvisations through collective songwriting, drawing on their shared knowledge of jazz, funk, reggae, gospel, Latin, and hip-hop.
