The Arts Studies Minor

Students who pursue a minor in Arts Studies have many different objectives, such as:
  • building a foundation for further work in or a lifelong appreciation of the arts.
  • linking the arts to their major, or the arts to one another, perhaps doing studio work that combines media.
  • exploring the aesthetic dimensions of a contemporary technology.
  • probing the connections between works of art and their context.
Requirements
No one student pursues all the above objectives, but every Arts Studies minor meets the following two requirements:
  1. Complete eighteen hours of work in Arts Studies with a grade of C or better.
  2. Select Arts Studies courses that balance three kinds of work: (1) the history of artforms, styles and their cultural settings; (2) the analysis and criticism of art and the theory of art; and (3) the creation or performance of works of art. Many arts courses offer work in at least two of these three areas. All the selected courses may deal with the same artform, or may include two or more of the arts.
There are many Arts Studies courses out of which an Arts Studies minor may be built. For a listing of these courses, refer to the list of Foundation Courses, Linking Courses and Capstone Courses under the Arts Applications Major. This list is suggestive of possibilities and not exhaustive. The headings "studio," "production" and "performance" identify courses offering creative or performance opportunities.

Procedure

  1. Consult with Dr. David B. Greene, Director of Arts Studies, room 242, 1911 Building, 513-1903), to select courses that suit your needs and that fulfill the requirements above.
  2. Submit a “Plan of Study” for the minor. The form is available from Ms. Hope Ziglar, Caldwell 106.
