Mission
The Center for Information Society Studies (CISS) is designed to aid in identifying and resolving the social and policy issues arising from technological innovation and new communication media. It seeks to establish NC State as a national leader in bridging the gap between the study of science and technology and the understanding and amelioration of social problems. This work adds a valuable dimension to NCSU's tradition of applying high-level research skills to practical problems.

CISS engages researchers involved in technological frontiers such as telecommunication networks and software design in joint social and policy research with faculty in such disciplines as communication, design, education, management, political science, rhetoric, and sociology.

Issues of interest to researchers affiliated with CISS include

  • information overload and attention management
  • intellectual property
  • privacy
  • changing labor markets and social mobility
  • electronic commerce
  • usability and access
  • new forms of literacy
  • the convergence of visual, oral, and verbal modes of communication
  • technology-enhanced democratic decision-making
  • public participation in technology policy

The Center for Information Society Studies evolved from The Center for Communication in Science, Technology and Management (CCSTM). The CCSTM website is still maintained as a record of activities and achievements from 1995 - 1999.
