LabWrite: Summary of Current Status

LabWrite provides students guidance not just in writing the lab report but in the full lab experience. The website includes three modules:

  • Pre-Lab, a set of questions for students to answer about the lab before doing the lab
  • In-Lab, advice for managing data during the lab; Post-Lab, a step-by-step guide to composing the visual and verbal components of the report
  • LabCheck, materials for revising the reports and for improving the next report. In addition, the site offers a range of graphing tutorials for enabling students to make meaningful visual representations of their data.

The website was piloted in five lab courses: two different introductory biology courses (one for science majors and the other for biology majors), geology, chemistry, and materials science engineering. Extensive qualitative data showed that students found LabWrite useful and generally usable (pinpointing some areas for improving the site). Quantitative data from an experiment found that LabWrite does enhance scientific literacy. Specifically, students who used LabWrite demonstrated that they learned the science of the lab and learned to think like scientists to a significantly greater degree than students who used only the usual guide to lab reports.
