| When able, the Department of Communication offers student scholarships that recognize meritorious academic and professional activities. These scholarships are funded through endowments and scholarship funds. Individual donations to any of these endowments are welcome. Student recipients will be determined by faculty in the Department of Communication’s five concentrations after considerations of relevant criteria. The Rebecca and Ruth C. Leonard Scholarship in Communication was established by Dr. Rebecca Leonard to honor the memory of Ruth Cardon Leonard. Ruth Leonard taught elementary school for 29 years. Her dedication to her students and her profession was an inspiration to Dr. Leonard, who herself taught in the NC State Department of Communication for nearly 30 years. According to Dr. Leonard, Ruth Leonard "encouraged me to become the best teacher I could be . . . It is my hope that this scholarship will provide support students need to become the people and professionals they wish to be." The scholarship will be awarded to a rising senior in the Department's Public and Interpersonal Communication concentration. There are no self-applications. Applicants will be selected by a faculty committee, according to specific criteria established by Dr. Leonard.
