Minor in Linguistics

The Department of English and Department of Foreign Languages offer a minor in Linguistics to undergraduates majoring in any field, including English and Foreign Languages. The minor is designed to investigate the structure and function of language as a cognitive and behavioral science. Among students likely to be attracted to this minor are those who expect to pursue graduate study in linguistics, those interested in foreign languages or English as a second language, and those interested in communication sciences.

Students who minor in linguistics will:
      1. Study the formal structure of language organization on phonological, syntactic, semantic, and discourse levels.
      2. Examine modes of linguistic argumentation as a type of scientific inquiry.
      3. Understand the systematic variation of language in its social context.
      4. Explore the applications of linguistic knowledge.
The undergraduate B.A. minor requires the successful completion of five courses in representative areas of linguistics.

4. one of the following:
  ANT 254 Language and Culture
  ENG 525 Variety in Language
  ENG 326 History of the English Language
  ENG 327 Language and Gender
  ENG 494 Special Topics in Linguistics
  ENG 491 Honors Seminar (where relevant)
5. one of the following:
PHI 331 Philosophy of Language
CSC 502 Computational Linguistics
  ENG 523 Language Variation Research Seminar
ENG 527 Critical Discourse Analysis
ENG 528 Language Change Research Seminar
ENG 532 Narrative Analysis
  or an additional course from groups 3 and 4
Any substitutions for courses listed above must be approved in writing by the coordinator of the linguistics program.

The minor is administered by the present Coordinator of the Linguistics Minor, Dr. Walt Wolfram. Linguistics faculty, including Dr. Dave Herman, and Dr. Erik Thomas will serve as an advisory committee to the coordinator.
