The William C. Friday Linguistics Lab

The William C. Friday Linguistics Lab, established in 1994, allows students to become involved in the study of language and language variation in a number of different ways. Linguistic Analysis

The multi-media consoles with tape deck, VCR, and TV allow students an opportunity to listen to and view a large repository of audio and video tapes on language and language variation. The collection of tapes includes those from interviews currently being conducted by the staff of the North Carolina Language and Life Project as well as archival tape collections.

Since 1992, dialect interviews with more than 400 speakers from diverse regions of North Carolina have been added to existing archival tape collections. The archival collection includes all interviews conducted for the compilation of the Dictionary of American Regional English (1965-1970) for the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, as well as the collection of Dialect Recordings of the United States compiled by the Center for Applied Linguistics. The overall repository of dialect tapes now exceeds 700, making it the largest sociolinguistic collection of this type in the South and one of the most diverse collections of dialect recordings in the United States.

Who can use the Linguistics Lab?

The Lab is useful to students and faculty at all levels of linguistic expertise as well as people in many different fields of study and work. During lab hours our staff can help you get started with the equipment. You do not need to know all about computers or software; the programs are quite accessible with limited computer knowledge.
