Akosombo: The Volta and Cocoa
After we visited the weavers we headed for Akasambo, right on the Volta river - in fact, right in front of the Volta Dam. The Dam created Lake Volta, the largest man-made lake in the world. The view from the hotel was spectacular. So was this hotel. This was like a resort up in the mountains, and I actually had my first cup of cappuccino since leaving London! All other coffee is Nescafe instant. Kind of strange, since they grow some of the best coffee here, but they export it before processing, like so many of their other natural resources. One of the problems with the economy here, it seems. (We also got to see them drying and bagging the cocoa beans for shipping when we drove to Kumasi. Cocoa is their largest export. Our guide is from the region where much of this grows and he had the bus driver stop so he could pick one and cut and share with us. We ate the pasty substance inside, which is white and somewhat sweet. The bean, where the cocoa is derived, is bitter.)
We took a boat ride up the Volta the next day and just hung out and listened to live music. Arrived at a small island where some students rode in canoes on the lake.

| Bagging the dried cocoa beans. After they are picked the beans, covered in a white, moist substance, are laid out to dry under palm leaves, where they also begin to ferment while they dry. |
They are bagged up and then ready to ship around the world - including Hershey Pennsylvania! It looked like it was going to rain, so these men had to get them bagged up in a hurry! |
