Teacher presents background information about Kente cloth and the different
types worn by the people of Ghana. Students bring to class materials
to create their own Kente apparel. Students will use information they
researched about they symbols, geometric shapes and patterns as they
design their cloth.
Each student will bring a black T-shirt to class and one light colored
sheet. The boys will make a drape to go over themselves. The girls will
make a skirt and a matching head wrap. The students can use paint, markers
and food coloring to create the patterns and colors to portray their
assigned roles.
Materials:
- black T-shirt
- paint/markers/food coloring/or other dying products
- sheet
- safety pins
- gold, silver, black ribbons
- glue
After students have created their Kente cloth they will model their
creations to the class in a fashion show. Students will explain the
significance of the patterns and colors of their cloth. During the fashion
show students will act out the roles of the Ghanaian person they researched
in English class.
