Kente Cloth: English Activities


Teacher will review information about Ghanaian Celebrations and the Kente cloth with students. Students will research the different societal roles of the people of Ghana. Students will role and research the type of Kente cloth the person would wear. Students will write a brief explanation of the clothing and person’s role for a class presentation. Teacher will provide a list of different roles the students may choice.

 

Art


Teacher presents background information about Kente cloth and the different types worn by the people of Ghana. Students bring to class materials to create their own Kente apparel. Students will use information they researched about they symbols, geometric shapes and patterns as they design their cloth.

Each student will bring a black T-shirt to class and one light colored sheet. The boys will make a drape to go over themselves. The girls will make a skirt and a matching head wrap. The students can use paint, markers and food coloring to create the patterns and colors to portray their assigned roles.

Materials:

  • black T-shirt
  • paint/markers/food coloring/or other dying products
  • sheet
  • safety pins
  • gold, silver, black ribbons
  • glue


After students have created their Kente cloth they will model their creations to the class in a fashion show. Students will explain the significance of the patterns and colors of their cloth. During the fashion show students will act out the roles of the Ghanaian person they researched in English class.
