Kente Cloth: Mathematics Activities

Teacher will present different patterns of Kente cloth to the class. Students will identify the geometric shapes found in the pieces of cloth. Students will practice drawing some of the geometric shapes found on the cloth and explain the theorems and laws that apply to specific figures and patterns. As an assessment students will design a poster with one of the geometric patterns found on the Kente cloth. The poster will also include a brief explanation of the geometric pattern. Students will present posters to the class.

Science Activities

Teacher will explain the origin of the dyes/inks used to make Kente cloth. Students will learn about the chemical makeup and formulas of some of the dyes used to make the Kente cloth. Students will research the chemical composition of the dyes and materials of the Kente cloth. Have students test different dyes on pieces of cloth to create their own patterns. Students will display their patterns in the class.
