Kente Cloth: Social Studies Activities


Teacher will introduce activities by presenting background information about Ghana and the Kente cloth to students. Students will learn about the historical and cultural traditions of the cloth and research additional information concerning the different Adinkra symbols and their meanings. Students will create posters explaining 2 Adinkra Symbols that they researched. They will present posters and brief report about the information they researched to the class.

Example:

Gye Nyame (except God). Symbol of the Omnipotence
and immortalityof God.

 

Examples of colors and their representations:

Emerald green -bountiful harvest

Indigo blue - love/caretaker (animals, etc.)

Silver and Black - Dancers

Gold -King/Royalty

Ivory -Joy/Brides
