Cape Coast: A Fishing Town
Saturday was a free day, and I used it to tour the town of Cape Coast, and get some much needed R and R at pool side. I headed out at 6 AM with Wendy, Mariah, Orianna, and Kristin, walking along the coast toward Cape Coast Castle, two miles up the beach. We passed many women and children carrying firewood (on their heads, of course) up the beach for their days fires. We also passed several small communities, bathing and doing morning "business." We reached the town and were rewarded with a sunrise view of the castle and of the large fishing canoes livening the harbor. It was interesting for me to compare this to a harbor town I saw last June in Yorkshire, England - Whitby. Or even to our own fishing communities off the Carolina coast. Looking at the images on my computer afterward it dawned on me how different they are from each other, yet still very similar - making their living off the sea. I wonder what stories these peoples might be able to share and relate to each other.
The morning was over before we knew it and we took a taxi back to the hotel to have breakfast by 9:30. We then spent the remainder of the day lazing by the poolside, drinking fresh-squeezed pineapple juice and eating mango and watermelon! I had grilled grouper for lunch, with fries and mixed veggies. Was delicious!
