Easter (Paskha)
(Falls usually in March)
Easter is celebrated in Russia very similarly to that of the United States. Sweet breads called sweet cakes and painted eggs are part of the Easter tradition in Russia. On Easter people usually gather with their family and exchange their painted eggs. A coffee cake made with raisins, nuts or fruits, called kulich is served on Easter Sunday. A cheese mold, named after the holiday, called paskha is very popular to eat on the Thursday or Friday before Easter Sunday. The Easter dinner celebration includes beautiful table decorations and many flower arrangements. The Russian families go to a Russian Orthodox church for two hours and stand while they worship. The Easter Candlelight Procession service is a tradition that follows the church service. The Russians walk home with their candles still lit and greet friends and neighbors as they walk by.
