Next, we went to an outdoor market, where my host bought a few items. It is a combination of the flea markets and farmer’s markets we have in North Carolina. I was also interested in seeing a grocery store. Luckily, my host needed cheese, pepper, mayonnaise, etc., so it was our next destination. The grocery stores in Russia are very different from ours. There is a clerk in each section. There are meat sections, dairy sections, and so on. You have to decide what items you want and pay the cashier. The cashier is usually in a booth. Once you have paid, the cashier gives you a receipt. You take your receipt to each section where you have paid for something and show it to the clerk. The clerk will then wrap up your items for you.

We had accomplished many things at this point and it was 3 o’clock in the afternoon. My host and I agreed that we both needed a nap, so we went back to her apartment and slept for a few hours.

I awoke to the aroma of dinner being cooked. The dinner turned out to be really delicious. My host made chicken a la king. She had been to the United States several times and this was one of her favorite dishes. She also made a Russian salad. The ingredients were crab, cabbage, rice, cucumbers, eggs, corn, and mayonnaise. We drank water with our meal. For dessert, we ate some chocolate cake and drank hot tea.

After dinner, my host showed me pictures of her family and friends. She spoke of how close she is to her family. You could see the love in their smiling faces. I enjoyed looking through her photo albums. She even had a picture of her best friend getting married at The Wedding Palace.

After we put the last album away, we were both pretty tired. I ended the day by writing in my journal, while my host graded essays. All in all, it was a wonderful first day!
