On the way home we stopped in the woods to see the Witch's Tree. It's a famous
location in a Karelian folk story. The story tells about a witch
disguised as a beautiful maiden who lures a handsome fellow to
this tree. When he is completely under her spell, she changes
into her witch form. He ends up being killed as he tries to escape
from her. His body is returned to his town and as the girl who
loved him cries over his body, her tears fall on him and bring
him back to life. Not too likely to happen, but then what good,
self-respecting fairy tale could really happen? Anyway, people
today visit this tree and tie pieces of fabric on the branches.
In the breeze it's a pretty site. The tree looks alive with dancing,
colored pieces of cloth.
After stopping at the tree, we went to a beautiful waterfall and
got out to walk around and take pictures. The waters were a deep
emerald green with swirling white foam on top.
