When we were leaving, we were told the story of the two lounging, marble cherubs. According
to legend, Catherine wanted a way to easily determine east from
west. Since the sun rises in the east, the cherub in the east
window is waking up. The cherub in the west window is going to
sleep with the setting of the sun.

Near the Catherine Palace is the unrestored Alexander Palace. It was the favorite home of Russia's last czar, Nicholas II
(reigned 1894-1917). He was the father of Anastasia.
