Petrozavodsk is the capital of the Russian Republic of Karelia. It has very close connections with St. Petersburg, a city built by Czar Peter the Great in 1703. Peter the Great used Petrozavodsk as his factory town during wartime while he was building his cultural center and capital in St. Petersburg. This is why there is a memorial in the center of town dedicated in his honor. The town is situated on Onega Lake, which is frozen this time of year, so I was able to see many ships stuck in the harbor. Statues around the water's edge are gifts from sister cities all over the world. (For more pictures of the town of Petrozavodsk, click the camera to go to Angelina's photo album)

When I arrived home from the afternoon tour, my "mother" had made borscht, which is a red-colored, vegetable soup which contains a lot of beets. The soup also has potatoes, corn, and meat -- this one had a chicken breast. This food is a Russian cultural tradition, and I felt honored that my "mother" had made it for me. I was so full from my two breakfasts that I couldn't eat anything else, though. In the evening, I attended a dinner at another host's home. Then, it was home to bed for my first good night sleep in three days!
