Time Zone Activity 2
Time Zones and Technology

STEP ONE

Locate a map of Russia (the entire country) in your social studies textbook. On a white piece of paper, neatly trace the outline of the country.

Locate St. Petersburg on your map. Mark this city with a small circle. Locate Moscow on your map. Mark this capital city with a star.

STEP TWO

** In the computer lab, log on to http://www.worldtimezone.com**

To the left, click on the "USA TIME" button and then answer the following questions.

1. America is divided into time zones.

2. They are called the , ,
, and zones.

Now, click on the "RUSSIA TIME" button, just above the first button.

1. Russia is a country divided into time zones.

STEP THREE

Divide your map into eight time zones, being accurate based on the website divisions of Russia. Color-code your map exactly as the website has done.

St. Petersburg and Moscow should both be in the first time zone. This zone is eight hours ahead in time of the Eastern Standard Time zone, where Raleigh, NC is located. So, when it is 12:00 am in Raleigh, it is 8:00 am in Moscow.

Draw a clock above each time zone in Russia. You should have eight clocks. The first clock should say 8:00 am. Fill in the time for each remaining clock.

STEP FOUR

Finally, write down your schedule for one entire day.

Now, beside each time on your schedule above, write what time it would be in Moscow.

What do you notice?

What are most Russians in Moscow doing while American children are going to school?

What are most Americans doing whle Russians are doing their daily activities?
