Captain Josiah Pender (1819 - 1864)
In 186, a month before North Carolina
seceded from the Union,
Capt. Pender and his group
of 50 men captured Fort Macon.
Just over a year later in April 1862, General Ambrose E. Burnside
regained control of the fort for the Union.
