Jechonias Willis (1838 - 1862)
Jechonias Willis died in battle while defending Fort Macon from the Federals
in 1862.
Other Beaufort residents that were defending the fort were allowed to return
to Beaufort as long as they honored the terms of the agreement of their release.
Tears came to General Burnside's eyes as he watched Jechonias' family claim
the pine box in which Jechonias had been shipped home.
