Captain James Lente Manney (1827 - 1889)
A graduate of Columbia Medical
College in 1848,
Dr. Manney left Beaufort to join the 1849 California
Gold Rush. Not being able to strike it rich, Dr. Manney
returned to his medical practice in Beaufort. In 1861,
he joined Capt. Pender's militia in the takeover of
Fort Macon. Just over a year later, Union forces seized
the fort. After being released back to the Confederate Army,
he took part in the attack on New Bern in 1864,
and the following year at Petersburg, Captain James
Manney served with Lee's army. After fighting in the war,
he once again returned to Beaufort to practice medicine.
