Somewhere on the Craven Street side, there is supposedly a grave of a girl buried in a Keg of rum. The story is this: Once upon a time an English family, including an infant daughter, came to Beaufort. The girl grew up with a desire to see her homeland, and persuaded her mother to allow her to go make the voyage, under the condition that her father go and promise to return the girl in one piece, The girl enjoyed her visit but expired on the voyage back. She would have been buried at sea, but her father could not bear to break his promise. He purchased part of the cargo...a keg of rum...knocked out the bottom, and deposited his daughter, resealed the keg and buried her in Beaufort.
