Dr. Ewen prepares the group at the fort. Dr. Charles Ewen professor of  Archeology at East Carolina University tells a tour group of the recent discovery of the Commandant's House, found some 600 yards from the actual fort.
Visitors listen intently as Dr. Ewen explains the logistics of an actual archaeological excavation.  Fourteen undergraduate and graduate students assisted in the 5 week dig from May-June 2001 using tools such as shovels, sifters and trowels. Dr. Ewen explains the dig of the Eliason House.
Artifacts found at the Eliason House Graduate students identify artifacts carefully removed from the site, consisting of bullet leads, green glass bottles, buttons, and initialed comb, and assorted coins.
