A Soldier's Life

Bunk Beds The enlisted men slept here in bunks.  A total of 20-40 men lived in these quarters.  Their belongings hung between the bunks.
This is the room in which the soldiers made their meals.  The officers sat at the heads of the tables on wooden stools.  The cookstoves can be seen adjacent to the tables.  This served two purposes: to prepare the meal and heat the room. Mess Hall
Daily Rations Commissary

Enlisted men would come to the commissary to receive their ration of food.  However, the officers had to pay for their own rations.  All of the men were given rations to prevent scurvy.
