Beaufort Fisheries

Atlantic Menhaden as a Resource

Menhaden became important as an economic resource after the Civil War. Beaufort Fisheries is a factory that uses menhaden as the raw material to make fish meal, fish oil, and high protein fish solubles.
Most menhaden are caught within a mile of the ocean shore. A purse seine is used to catch the fish.
The outside of the factory looks like warehouses. There are many cats wandering around. Can you guess why?
The fish are loaded into the factory from the ships. Once in the building, they are roasted for processing.
The roaster room is very hot. This machine is similar to the one used to make corn oil.
These tanks are used to stort the fish oil. They look
very similar to the tanks used to stored heating oil.

"So what are some potential uses of the menhaden?" you ask.
