The Film Program at NCSU

offers a variety of ways to study film at the undergraduate level, by simply taking courses, becoming a Film Major, a Film Minor, or an English Major with a concentration in film. All of these curricular options are outlined below.

Information about applying to NCSU can be found at Undergraduate Admissions.  The Film Studies Major is listed under Arts Applications (Film Studies), 6LRT 036F.


Arts Applications-Film Major
(curriculum code: LRT-F)

To Become an Arts Applications-Film Major
Students must have a GPA of 2.00 or better to enroll.

To declare the film major, see the Student Services Coordinator in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, in Caldwell 106. She will enroll you in the major and you will be assigned an advisor from among the film faculty.

I. History, Analysis, and Criticism (15 hours)
ENG 272—Writing about Film
ENG 282--Introduction to Film
ENG/COM 364--History of Film to 1940
ENG/COM 374--History of Film Since 1940
AFS/ENG 375—African American Cinema
ENG 382—Film and Literature
ENG 384--Film Theory
ENG 492—Styles and Genres
IDS 496--Topics in Film and Interdisciplinary Studies

II. Production and Studio Courses (6 hours)
COM 267-- Electronic Media Writing*or*
ENG 433--Screenwriting
COM 344--Introduction to Film Production

III. Linking Courses: 6 hours
ENG 382--Film and Literature
ENG 492 or IDS 496—Styles and Genres (depending upon topic)

IV. Capstone Course: 3 hours of MDS 494 or ENG 384. If a student takes MDS 494 more than once, he or she may count it toward the linking course requirement.

V. Advised Elective: 3 hours, chosen in consultation with student's advisor.

Film Minor

To Declare a Minor in Film
Email Dr. Devin Orgeron or call 515-4138.

At the beginning of the semester in which you plan to graduate, you will need to see Dr. Orgeron to fill out the film minor form to submit along with your graduation paperwork

English Major with a Film Concentration (curriculum code: LFM)

This curriculum combines the study of literature with film studies. In addition to required courses in Film History and Film & Literature, students may take such special topics courses as Horror Film, the Musical, Howard Hawks and the Coen Bros., Robert Altman and Stanley Kubrick, Holocaust Film, and Science Fiction Film.

1. Required Film Courses (9 hours)

2. Core English Courses (21 hours)

Linguistics, Rhetoric, or Writing Practice. (6 hrs in TWO areas)
Choose two courses from: Linguistics (ENG 210, 324 , 325, 326, 327, 328, 491H*, 524, 525), Rhetoric (ENG 321, 323, 411, 422, 425, 426, 491H*), and Writing Practice (ENG 201, 214, 215, 272, 287, 288, 289, 314,315, 323, 350, 417, 421, 433, 488, 489, 491H*, 495). *

LFM students should take ENG 272, Writing about Film, or ENG 433, Screenwriting for one of their Linguistics/Rhetoric/Writing Practice courses.

Literature I. (3 hours)

Literature II. (3 hours)
Any course that meets the Literature I requirement, or: ENG 246, 248, 252, 265,

Literature Before 1800. (3 hours)
Choose from: Medieval British Literature (ENG 451, 452, 490, 491H*, 509, 510, 551, 578), Renaissance British Literature (ENG 439, 449, 491H*, 529, 530, 561, 578), 18th Century British Literature (ENG 362, 462, 491H*, 562, 563, 579), and American/Colonial Literature Before 1800 (ENG 467, 491H*, 531).

Literature After 1800. (3 hours) Choose from: 19th Century British Literature (ENG 363, 453, 491H*, 550, 560, 564), U. S. Literature Before 1900 (ENG 368, 369, 420*, 448, 467, 468, 469, 476, 491H*, 531, 555, 565, 573, 575) and 20th-21st Century British or American (ENG 370, 371, 372, 373, 380, 381, 398, 399, 420*, 464, 465, 470, 471, 491H*, 548, 549, 570, 571, 572, 573, 576, 577, 580).

Literary Author/Genre. (3 hours)
Choose from Author (ENG/FL 392, ENG 420, 451, 460, 486, 487, 491H*, 539*, 551, 558, 561) and Genre (ENG 362, 363, 369, 370, 371, 372, 373, 380, 376, 377, 491H*, 497*, 539*, 563, 564, 570, 571, 572, 573, 574, 576, 577, 578, 579; ENG/FL 393, 394*).

3. Film Studies Electives. (6 hours)
Choose 6 hours from AFS/ENG 375, COM 267, COM 344, COM/ENG 364, COM/ENG 374, ENG 272, ENG 384, ENG 433, ENG 492, ENG 585, ENG 587, ENG 591, FLF 318, 352, FLS 318, FLG 318, IDS 496.


Although some courses are listed in more than one category, no course may satisfy more than one requirement. Students may take no more than four 200 level classes. Either Literature I or Literature II must be taken at the 200 level.
LFM students may take a film course for their CHASS Arts and Letters requirement
