Obsidian salutes Michael McBride as our inaugural Artist-in-Residence
The Artist
Vibrancy, warmth, and realism...in the setting of magnificent color is one way to describe the work of Michael J. McBride. His skill in blending colors sets him apart from other artists. McBride received his Master's Degree in painting and drawing from Illinois State University and his undergraduate degree in art from Tennessee State University. He lives in Nashville, where his studio, M & M Studio, is located.
McBride's work is in private and corporate collections throughout the United States and abroad. His art has been featured on the Warner Bros. sitcoms "Living Single" (Fox Network) and "The Wayans Brothers Show" (on WGN, Chicago). He has been an illustrator of children's books for Visions Educational Group. McBride was featured in Visions of My People, sixty years of African American art in Tennessee, an exhibit organized by the Tennessee State Museum. He was one of twelve artists selected by The Tennessean newspaper for inclusion in the Millennium 2000 Collection. He was one of 17 artists featured in the 2001 Sister Cities Exhibit in Belfast, Northern Ireland. McBride is a curator emeritus of the Hiram V. Gordon Gallery and a instructor Tennessee State University.
Currently, McBride is a principal artist in the Too Black Too Fast exhibit, a tribute to the history of black jockeys in America. Too Black Too Fast is currently touring both nationally and internationally.
