The major in Women's and Gender Studies, approved in April 2006 by The UNC Board of Governors, is a wonderful choice for students interested in critically examining and reinterpreting existing data and common assumptions about gender and gender identity, in understanding the contributions made by women in various fields of endeavor, and in gaining insight into femnist theories and methodologies. The degree enables students to examine both women's and men's lives as they are affected by gender, sexuality, sexual orientation, age, race, class, ethnicity, religion, and national differences.
Degree Requirements
The B.A. in Women’s and Gender Studies requires a total of 122 total hours for the major. A total of 30 of those 122 hours will be in courses in the major, 12 of which will be advised electives. Students are required to take WGS 200, WGS 210, WGS 492, and WGS 310, an internship.
Students must also successfully complete all university GER requirements, as well as College of Humanities and Social Sciences requirements. WGS majors will also be required to either complete an internship (WGS 310), or prepare a capstone senior thesis as part of his or her degree.
Students who are admitted into the Women’s and Gender Studies Program are expected to maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.0. Students must receive a “C-” or better in any major course to receive credit for that course. Students must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 in their major.
Applicants for transfer into the WGS program from within the university must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on their completed college level work. No more than 72 hours of approved college credit and up to 12 hours for the 30-hour major will be accepted from transfers from outside the university.
