1. FAC
Faculty Advisory Committee
Lindsey, Martin, Sremaniak, Whitten, Hanck, Khaledi The Faculty Advisory Committee (FAC) functions to facilitate communication in both directions between the faculty and the departmental administration on policy and planning issues to ensure representation of diverse views. The FAC also coordinates the work of administrative units and other committees.
2. GA
Graduate Admissions
Bowden*, Gorman, Gunnoe, He, Smirnov This committee acts to advance the quality and quantity of students in the program. Members will reach consensus on the admission of graduate students and oversee admissions activities of the Graduate Office.

3. GC
Graduate Curriculum
Bowden*, Comins, Gunnoe, Whangbo, Feldheim This committee acts continually to assess and modify graduate curricula and degree requirements to meet pedagogical goals and to remain in compliance with certification or accreditation agencies. Members will propose the creation of new course offerings, define these in terms of need and general structure, propose the elimination of outdated offerings, and determine the frequency of course offerings.

Graduate Recruiting
Gunnoe*, Gorman, Novak, Ghiladi, Ison, Oliver-Hoyo This committee acts to advance the quality and manage the quantity of applications to our graduate program. Members will devise and implement recruiting initiatives, encourage all faculty to engage in recruiting efforts, advise faculty on these efforts, and oversee recruiting activities of the Graduate Office.
5. Graduate and Undergraduate Awards Shultz*, Bowden, Boss, Canelas Will select the recipients of the various awards and fellowships for undergraduate and graduate awards.
6A. UCR Synthesis
Undergraduate Curriculum Reform–Synthesis
Neyhart*, Brown*, Shultz, Novak, Deiters, Maggard Will complete the implementation of the Synthesis I and Synthesis II laboratory courses for the new undergraduate curriculum by Summer 2007. This includes development and testing of experiments with the existing equipment and facilities, submission of the course action forms, and assessment of instrumentation needs for future improvements.
6B. UCR Measurement
Undergraduate Curriculum Reform–Measurement
Folmer*, Muddiman*, He, Switzer, Boss, Khaledi, Smirnova, Franzen Will complete the implementation of the Measurement I and Measurement II laboratory courses for the new undergraduate curriculum by Summer 2007. This includes development and testing of experiments with the existing equipment and facilities, submission of the course action forms, and assessment of instrumentation needs for future improvements.
6C. UCR Proposal
Undergraduate Curriculum Reform–Proposal
Neyhart*, Sremaniak*, Lindsey, Franzen Will identify sources and seek external funding for the support of the new undergraduate Synthesis and Measurement laboratories; Will work closely with the Educational Initiatives Committee for alternative funding sources.
7. UAR
Undergraduate Admission and Advising
Brown*, Boss, Smirnov, Shultz, Gallardo-Williams Will develop and implement highers admission standards for transfer students; Will assess offering sections for Chemistry majors for all service courses; Will provide guidelines and training for faculty to participate in advising undergraduate students in Chemistry; Will assign students to advisors on an equitable basis.

Undergraduate Research Committee
Gunnoe*, Brown, Deiters, Gallardo-Williams Will evaluate applications for research fellowships and evaluate policies & procedures for undergrad research.
9. TLI
Teaching and Learning Initiatives
Oliver-Hoyo*, Sremaniak*, Hendrickson, Sandberg, Canelas, Folmer, Galardo-Williams Will examine implementation of innovative methods (e.g. SCALE-UP / inquiry guided learning) to upper level courses for Chem. majors as well as service courses; Will explore the available resources and mechanisms for funding instructional programs in the department such as grants opportunities from local and federal agencies, Will examine potential sources such as sale of instructional materials and/or identifying publishing /printing companies for best royalty returns, etc. Will work closely with DET.
10. DET
Distance Education and Technology
Sandberg*, Brown, Oliver-Hoyo, Petrovich, Gallardo-Williams Will explore the mechanisms and assist faculty in developing instructional materials in electronic format for distributed learning; Will provide awareness, guidelines and assistance in offering course materials on the web; Will identify suitable resources such as software tools, software developers, web sites, etc. for creation of new electronic, audio/visual, and interactive learning materials for class room teaching, animation and demonstration, support of teaching laboratories, etc.
11. FDP
Faculty Development and Promotion
Novak*, Gorman, Whangbo, Sremaniak Will develop specific job descriptions for Teaching Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor positions; Will provide mentoring for the Assistant Professors toward achieving Tenure and Promotion.
12. AUR
University, Alumni, and Industrial Relations
Lindsey*, Canelas*, Muddiman, Hendrickson, Burgess This committee advocates the growth of the department, identifies and pursues new opportunities to obtain resources, and maintains a working relationship with faculty on university committees. Members propose and implement initiatives consistent with the mandate and act as representatives of the department in interactions with the university and alumni.

International Relations
Smirnov*, Franzen, He, Oliver-Hoyo, Folmer Will explore opportunities for research collaboration with faculty, student exchange/recruitment in different countries; Will identify and target key international institutions and programs and initiate dialog for establishment of long term relationships.
14. CMP
Collaborative Multidisciplinary Programs
Whitten*, Martin, Muddiman, Gorman Will explore mechanisms for interdisciplinary collaborative programs, with an emphasis on NCSU departments in engineering and life sciences (such as Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Vet. School, Textile, Toxicology).
15. Computers, IT, and Web Support Hennessee*, Whitten, Sandberg, Melander Will assess the overall need of the department in the areas of computer, network, IT , and Web support for research and teaching.
16. OSF
Operations, Space, and Facilities
Hanck*, Novak, Whangbo, Maggard, Neyhart This committee acts to maximize the efficiency of departmental operations, continually review space and facilities needs for teaching and research, and develop recommendations to address long- and short-term space and facilities needs. Members will manage, in conjunction with the Chair, how space, facilities, and staff are allocated.
17. Safety Hanck*, Comins, Shultz, Petrovich, Cady, Wahl This committee acts to ensure that the department meets or exceeds all relevant safety standards. Members will inform the department of safety issues and changes in university policy, oversee the safety instruction provided to new employees, provide assistance to PI’s development of safety plans, and conduct periodic inspections of laboratories.
18. Seminar Smirnova*, Bowden, Maggard, Melander This committee acts to assemble and advertise the departmental seminar program, invite speakers, ensure that a diverse set of speakers are invited, assess quality of seminar room and AV facilities, and encourage faculty and graduate student attendance. Members will extend invitations to seminar speakers, select faculty host for each speaker, approve date of visit, and otherwise execute tasks required to run the seminar program.
19. Awards Whangbo*, Smirnova, Comins, Warren, Wahl This committee shall act to promote the recognition of the department and members within it. Members shall, in part, identify awards and growth opportunities for faculty and assist the Chair in identifying and selecting candidates for these opportunities.
20. Biological/ Instrumentation Core Facilities Deiters*, Melander, Ghiladi, Ison, Smirnov, Franzen Will assess the need and feasibility of creation of shared instrumentation and/or biological core facilities for the support of research programs; Will create an inventory of the available equipment in the department / research groups that are available for shared use, and the possibility of acquiring equipment from industry or through instrumentation grants.
21. General Chemistry Group Petrovich*, plus other faculty in General Chemistry Facilitates communications among faculty teaching multiple sections of CH 101 and CH201.
22. Organic Chemistry Group Sandberg*, and other faculty in Organic Chemistry Facilitates communications among faculty teaching multiple sections of Organic Chemistry service courses.
23. NMR User Group Comins*, Sankar, Other interested faculty Facilitates communications among faculty using the NMR facility.
24. X-Ray User Group Martin*, Boyle, Other interested faculty Facilitates communications among faculty using the X-Ray facility.
25. MS User Group Muddiman*, Lyndon, Other interested faculty Facilitates communications among faculty using the Mass Spectrometry facility.
26. Staff Advisory Committee Boyle, Hennessee, Barefoot, Clark, Burgess, Rogers The Staff Advisory Committee (SAC) functions to facilitate communication between the staff and the departmental administration and faculty on policy and other issues, to ensure a representation of diverse views on issues, to assist in coordinating the work of units and daily operations, and to provide feedback for the performance evaluation of the Chair, departmental administration and staff.
