Undergraduate Curriculum in Chemistry

Program Description

The Department offers two undergraduate degree programs:

  • the B.S. program, code CH
  • the B.A. program, code CHA

The major difference between these two curricula is that the program leading to the B.S. Degree is more chemistry, physics, and mathematics-intensive, while the B.A. program offers considerably greater flexibility for choosing peripheral areas of concentration for which chemistry is the central science. Both programs can lead directly to various careers in industry, to professional school (medical, dental, veterinary), and to postgraduate work in many areas. The B.S. is clearly the best route to a Master's or Doctor's program in Chemistry. At North Carolina State University, about 56% of all the chemistry majors are double majoring with concentrations in the areas of Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Zoology to name a few.
