 What Chemists Do

Program Requirements

The Chemistry Department offers three areas of study in obtaining a degree in Chemistry. They are the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry - BS (CH), Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry - BA (CHA), and Bachelor of Science in Chemistry-Marine Science Concentration - BS (CHM). The major difference in these three programs is that the Bachelor of Science (CH) is more chemistry, physics and methematics-intensive, while the Bachelor of Arts (CHA) offers greater flexibility for choosing peripheral ares of concentration for which chemistry is the central science. The Bachelor of Science-Marine Science Concentration - CHM differs from the straight BS in that the advised electives are specified courses from Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences options. All three programs are virtually identical through the first three semesters and a final choice of a degree program need not be made until that time.

Eligibility
To be eligible for a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, a student must be enrolled in a degree program, must have completed at least 25 percent of credit hours required for graduation through courses offered by NCSU, and must have earned at least 30 of the last 45 hours of credit through NCSU courses.

Graduation
Upon completing the requirements for a degree in Chemistry, all students must have a grade point average of at least 2.0, based on all courses attempted at NCSU in order to receive a baccalaureat degree. This is in addition to other university, college and departmental requirements.
