We are the proud owners of a new Quantum Design MPMS XL7 SQUID Magnetometer, and we acknowledge NSF(CHE 0091247) and NC State University for support. The magnetometer can operate from 0-7 Tesla, and from 1.9 to 400 Kelvin. Sensitivity is ca. 1×10-7 emu to 7 Tesla. The high end is desirable to facilitate saturation of weakly magnetic samples and to study zero-field splitting. Options include a fiber optic sample holder for studying novel magneto-optic materials, transverse moment detection, and horizontal/vertical sample rotators to study magnetic films. Installation was completed on 8 September 2001.
You can now schedule time on the SQUID. Please contract Dave Shultz at to have an account created. Once an account has been created you can schedule time on the SQUID by visiting chemdept.chem.ncsu.edu/scheduling/ and signing up. The Help! page is very informative on how to use the software.
