NCSU Department of Chemistry
North Carolina State University, a Research I institution, is the state's
flagship university for applied sciences, engineering and technology.
The Department of Chemistry is recognized for its internationally and
nationally renowned scientists and its commitment to excellence in both
research and education.
Our Goal – Recognition as one of the top
25 chemistry departments in public institutions of higher education.
Our Mission – To provide a world-class educational
experience to students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels with
the goal of positioning them for success in life.
Our Team – Currently, we have
- 40 full-time faculty
- 24 research-active faculty
- 50 postdoctoral students and visiting scholars
- 24 support staff
- 120 graduate students
- 350 undergraduate majors
Our Achievements – From
1998 to 2003
- Faculty
- Increased our research faculty by 29% and of our overall faculty by
40%
- Increased our women faculty members to 25%
- Space
- Increased research space by 19,000 square feet
- Expenditures
- Increased expenditures to $12 M per year from all sources
- Increased chemical R&D spending by 21.6% since 1990–the largest
single increase for any US university
- Ranked 25 by C&E News in schools spending most of Chemical R&D–ranked
43rd last year
- Ranked 43 by C&E News in schools with the most federal support
for Chemical R&D–ranked 55th last year
- Undergraduate Program
- Ranked in the top 10% of the departments of chemistry in the US in
number of B.S. and B.A. degrees granted
- Taught approximately 5,000 students per year General Chemistry and
2300 students per year Organic Chemistry
- Developed a new course and text in General Chemistry to better meet
the educational needs of our undergraduates
- Graduate Program
- Grown the graduate program 35% and the research active groups by 62%
while increasing admissions standards
- Increased the number of women graduate students to 44%
- Increased the number of minority graduate students to 14%
- Partnership Initiatives
- Interdisciplinary Polymer Synthesis and Characterization Center at
NCSU
- Center for Chemical Diversity, Pharmaceutics, and Nanobiology
- Triangle Advanced Degree Program
