Glaxo and Burroughs-Wellcome Graduate Fellowships Awarded

Kenan Institute North Carolina Biotechnology Center Postdoctoral Fellowship Awarded
Dr.
Taufika Williams, working under the direction of Professor David Muddiman, is the
recipient of a Kenan Institute North Carolina Biotechnology Center Postdoctoral
Fellowship. The project is co-funded by the North Carolina Biotechnology Center
and LEAP Technologies (Carrboro, NC). Dr. Williams' project is entitled "Development,
Implementation and Vaildation of Novel Bioanalytical Technologies: Impact Human
Health through an Industrial and Academic Partnership." May, 2006
Pride of the Wolfpack Winners
The chemistry department is pleased to announce that Marcie Belisle,
Teresa Henline, Simon Lappi, Tony Radford, and Sabapathy Sankar have received the
Pride of the Worlfpack Award in recognition of their outstanding service to the
department and university. The chemistry department wishes to congratulate and
thank them for all their hard work. April, 2006
Undergraduate Research Scholarships Awarded
The Department of Chemistry has awarded four
Undergraduate Research Scholarships
for the 2006-2007 academic year. The recipients and their research advisors are
Gareth Wilson-Short (Mike Whangbo), Amanda Wolfe (Christian Melander),
Andy Tran (Brent Gunnoe), and Zach Nicholson (Stefan Franzen).

Elon Ison to Join Faculty
We
are pleased to welcome Dr. Elon Ison to the Faculty of the Department of Chemistry as
an assistant professor. Dr. Ison completed his Ph.D. at the University of Florida and has
conducted post-doctoral research at Purdue University. He is an expert in mechanistic
organometallic chemistry and will be developing a research program that explores novel
oxidation chemistry with emphasis on the development of environmentally friendly methods
using molecular oxygen and nitrous oxide as the oxidant. April, 2006
Reza Ghiladi to Join Faculty
We
are pleased to welcome Dr. Reza Ghiladi to the Faculty of the Department of Chemistry
as an assistant professor. Dr. Ghaladi completed his Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University
and has done post-doctoral work at the Mayo Clinic and University of California-San
Francisco. He is an expert in Bioinorganic Chemistry, and will be developing a research
program investigating the structure and function of metalloproteins and their role in human disease. April, 2006
Martin Group Paper makes cover of Nature Materials
Jim Martin and his group's paper on metallotropic liquid crystals will be published
and featured on the cover of the April issue of Nature Materials. Congratulations to Jim, Cristin
Keary, Todd Thornton, Mark Novotnak, Jeremey Knutson, and Jacob Folmer for their achievement. February, 2006
