The research interests of the Williams group include engineering enzymes by evolutionary redesign, and using engineered enzymes for the synthesis of natural product analogues and other small molecules for drug discovery and chemical biology applications. We are also interested in designing and implementing new screening/selection strategies for directed evolution. Our research is highly interdisciplinary, spanning molecular biology, organic synthesis, and biochemistry. At the same time, we hope to address real-world issues, such as the generation of new antibiotics to combat bacterial infection, and to learn more about how enzymes control specificity and catalysis.
