Explain it to...

The activity:

Ask the students to explain the process they are studying or the experiment that they are about to perform at three different levels:

Explain it to a 4-year-old. The idea is to simplify, to find the basic principle. Explain it to a 10-year-old: Here, more complex elements have to be incorporated, as well as elements to motivate and stimulate the curiosity of the "audience".

Explain it to a peer: Building upon the basic principles, add the more complex elements and all the details.

It can be done individually, as a short written exercise, or in groups. If it is done in groups, then different members can choose different roles. Make sure that the "listeners" make questions appropriate to their "age".
