ADVICE logo

ADVICE is an educational program sponsored by ClassTech to provide information on the AV industry and concepts associated with it. The program is free and open to interested faculty, staff and students. Through ADVICE, we plan to open eyes to the world of audio visual technologies and their integration into environments beyond classrooms to homes, churches, and shopping malls. Whether we realize it or not, issues surrounding audio visual environments are part of our daily lives. Our goal is to educate and promote awareness of these issues to the university community.

AV Hits Your Home
Introduction to Topics and Concepts

This session will skim the surface of the variety of topics that will be covered in future seminars. We will introduce some common themes that should guide a typical audio visual process. From display types and technologies to audio and control systems, ADVICE will serve as an introduction to different concepts in the AV industry and how they impact the user.

What Are You Looking At?
Projection Screens and Display Integration

Of course you know what you’re looking at, but does your audience? This will provide some tips on what a display should be. Compromises are inherent, but knowing the best solution will help make those compromises less damaging to the viewing environment.

Acronym Fun with Display Technologies
CRT, LCD, DLP, LCOS (D-ILA), Plasma

These are all buzz words in somebody’s vocabulary. You may or may not be able to tell the difference in how the different technologies look. Come learn about other pros and cons to each of these technologies that will help inform your decision on which one to purchase for your application.

Control Systems Flavors
What do they do and which one should I choose?

Everyone likes to be in control of the situation, but that’s not easy with 6 different remotes. This class will describe different control mediums as well as different control systems that are on the market, identifying pros and cons for each. Maybe you will find one that meets your needs?

Can You Hear Me (Now)?
Fundamentals of Audio

This is not a session on cell phones though that’s not a bad idea. We’ll break down components of an audio system and talk about applications of different types of microphones, audio processing components, and speaker systems in various environments.

Playing with Signals
Interfacing, Conversion, and Routing

What are the various types of audio visual signals? How can you manipulate them? Do you really want to manipulate them? What happens when you do? It’s all part of the signal toy box. Come learn what you can (and can’t) do to the variety of signals that are out there.
