Fall 2007 Survey

"Please provide any other comments you have about ClassTech rooms, their support, or classroom technology in general."

Again, I would just like to reiterate that classtech rooms should be assigned only to those who use the technology. These rooms are total serendity. I have felt so privileged to teach in these rooms. Unfortunately, I have not been assigned classtech rooms for next semester. Classtech suppport is wonderful. Thank you. You have all helped me so much. Nancy Swisher
All lecture rooms should have this level of capability
Already used both of above last semester
Any instruction about how to use video clips (with their audio) from available sources such as YouTube, news agencies, history channel, etc., if these are available for educational purposes, would be helpful.
Bostian 3712 has an ongoing problem with lighting. There is a bank of lights right in front of the screen at the front of the lecture hall, which DOES impact the quality of the images being displayed from the projector substantially. There is no way to switch them off without turning off all of the other lights in the room.
Changes instituted between semesters should be noted somewhere in a prominent manner -- i was taken by surprise on my first lecture fall semester because i did not anticipate changes. One of those changes is the loss of visual on the computer screen when i switch to projecting from the camera -- i would still like to see what is on the computer, even though i am not projecting it.
Daniels 429 has been renumbered as Daniels 434. All of my comments refer to Daniels 434.
EB2 rooms 1220 and 1226 were ideal for my purposes. Thank you!
Everything is great - keep up the good work. Being that it is the 21st century, ALL classrooms should be ClassTech rooms now.
Generally works very well. Need more classrooms upgraded.
great job!
Great, so far.
Hopefully the recent merger will not eviscerate ClassTech's ability to provide good support.
I am delighted to have these resources in the classroom. Having the equipment and finding it easy to use have stimulated me to expand my technology use in the classroom AND be able to accomplish some visions I had before we had this technology available. I'm grateful!!!
I am learning to use some of it. I still prefer my old set of maps, which I haven't found copies of in the net.
I am opposed to using electronics in teaching. It takes instructor's time to incorporate technology in the lectures, and, though students appreciate it, I have doubt that it improves their learning significantly. It takes imagination and memory effort to master scientific material, and high-tech glamour only gives the students an erroneous feeling of simplicity and switches off their own imagination.
I couldn't get "MATLAB" to work on the classroom computer. When I tried to start the program the machine said it had to be installed and that it would take something on the order of tens of minutes. So I gave up and from then on brought my own laptop.
I currently use the clickers (eInstruction/CPS) and I would like for that system to continue to be available on the lectern computer. At one point, the computers was serviced and this software was not reloaded. I had trouble during that class, since it was part of my lesson. Your staff did address it promptly and I was able to use it without any problems for the rest of the semester. Thanks for all your help!
I don't understand what items 12 and 13 refer to. On 13b., I may want to do this in the future, but have no plans to use the function now.
I feel incredibly fortunate that I have been able to get ClassTech rooms. There are always kinks, but those get worked out in time.
I teach in Riddick 450. It was not an option provided in teh drop down menu.
I tried using clickers this semester, and it was a disaster.
I use only the barest essentials of the equipment, i.e. mainly the oveerhead. But I like the ClassTech room I'm in and the technology that is there.
I would like more info on what I can do for quexs 12 and 13. The 2 classrooms that I used, WN 001 & 339RD are not on your list!!
I would like to have video confrencing enabled in the classrooms that can capture a live video feed, audio, and projected content. Also to allow two-way communication to take questions from those on the other end of the video conference. Finally, it would be nice to have these classes archived to be viewed later. This can be Especially useful for bringing in Guest Speakers from remote locations or broadcasting local guest speakers to remote locations or for later viewing. Take care! Andrew
I would love to be able to have the course as presented captured as I am very interested in offering my courses through distance education.
I would very much like to have the Opera browser installed and available for use in the classroom. Neither Internet Explorer nor Firefox will render all the special math symbols that I want to display in my visual presentations. Firefox, for example, will not display subscripts properly; IE and Opera do. IE does not display some common math symbols, such as ∴, and ∝. Firefox and Opera do. Given the limitations of IE and Firefox, and the superior display capabilities of Opera, we should have Opera on the system.
In 1212 EB2, the mouse was frequently unplugged and there was one class in which it did not work and I had to rely on keystrokes. Having a dedicated outlet that is not easily accessible to students w/computers would be helpful. Thank you.
It took approximately 2 weeks for the desks to be added to the chairs once classes started. This was unacceptable. Also, desks were randomly distributed in the classroom. Many times I would have to clear them away from the board area so that I could lecture.
It's great teaching in them.
Let's make sure that people who frequently use the technology have priority over those who infrequently or never use it.
Let's not let standardization interfere with the varied requirements for teaching different subjects. Also: If I do use computer technology, it will be from a Linux platform, using open-source software. My impression is that this is very difficult at present (unless I simply bring in my own laptop, and there seem to be issues with that as well). Please, please allow these options -- at some level, NC State is on record as supporting open source in principle. Let's try to make that true in practice as well.
Mine was in Riddick 351, not listed at the start of the survey. It's placement put me far from the class. Also, I HATE the arrangement of the seats in strict, fixed lecture format. I am appalled that so much money was spent in 2007 to recreate an old fashioned lecture hall. There is no flexibility in this classroom. If anything, the technology reinforeces the focus on the instructor.
More (smile). Thank you for moving classrooms into the 21st century!
My class was taught in the TV studio, EBII, 1230 as part of a distance education course, so most of the above questions don't apply.
No additional comments.
no comments, just gratitude
None.
Now that the bugs have been worked out, it is great and I appreciate it very much!
Officially I am fully retired now, but I have captured audio for over 10 years and captured projected video for the last couple of years. In the short term, I'd be happy to advise if my input would be useful. I know that the changing technology, means that my input will not be useful for very long. Even if I choose not to do so, I'd like to be able to edit the captured video before delivering it to the class. I think that the university desperately needs a testing facility that is manned at least 16 hours a day to give tests and exams scheduled individually. When students take a class online, there is no single time that everyone can meet to take tests. Since all other work is graded online using WebAssign, they should be tested the same way--with WebAssign. My class has a lab. There are skills like making solutions which just cannot be simulated on a computer. Other skills, like running specific instruments, also cannot be adequately simulated at least not for the first exposure to an instrument. These labs could be done by some combination of labs at community colleges or labs done from a mobile van. The community colleges seem like the most logical place to administer labs even done from a mobile van. I think that much more collaboration between the university and the community colleges is needed to offer any degree program in a technical area on line. I think that requirements for delivering labs goes well beyond the current ClassTech mission in delivering classes, but I have not found the proper entity on campus to address this problem, so I mention it here in case some one might "hear" me and know how to address the problem of delivering labs.
On average twice per semester I show a short media clip with sound, and am always pleasantly surprised with how well the audio system works in the ClassTech rooms.
One of the best services on campus.
One other suggestion is to get a piece of duct tape and tape the control wiring from the control panel to its connection underneath the desk. Three separate times it has become unplugged. I finally learned to check that I would come into the classroom at the start of the day and the panel was on or unresponsive.
Overall positive experience - reported 3-4 problems this semester with wireless mice not working, usually due to a faulty mouse or charger (i.e. not just that it wasn't charged). It would be helpful (and cheap) to have an auxiliary usb mouse in each room. I had to lecture several times using Windows keyboard shortcuts - less than ideal.
Please have a regular mouse to use as a backup when the remote mouse is dead. Thanks!
Riddick 314 where I taught was not on your menu of classrooms
see above comments. Thanks, Happy Holidays!!
See my other comments.
Staff does a great job. The tech rooms are essential for delivery of a quality foreign language program.
Support is always fast and helpful. It is one of your team's strong suits.
switching to turningpoint was disastrous. Please make such major changes in a more measured process next time.
Thanks very much.
The document projector in Winston 114 is unreliable in its focus. I called this complaint in once, and I don't know that it was ever fixed. Is the equipment getting old and in need of replacement? I had to fight the auto focus, because it would pan out again and again, throughout the latter half of the semester.
The drop down list of rooms did not include Riddick Hall Room 319 where I had my class
The library does not own all the films that I use in the DVD version, so the VHS player is necessary in classrooms.
The major issue is the inconveniently located light switch!
The noise level from the HVAC makes B3216 very hard to use. Students have a hard time hearing the teacher (and it's hard to hear the students). The mic helped some, but had to be turned up to the point that it made feedback. Also, the dvd vcr can't be operated from the touch pad--this makes it hard to use. Still, I'd rather have this room than no ClassTech at all. I teach environmental ethics to classes of 50 to 60--the equipment allows me to make it come alive for them.
The technology is now essential to teaching -- but it needs to work on a day-in/day-out basis, not erratically. Also, rooms need to be standardized so they all work the same (ie the same on/off, up/down configurations) -- there is no time in a 50-minute hour to relearn a different system.
The two men that came to my class room to assist me with the DVD player were very helpful and professional. They showed up 15 minutes before my class started to make sure that the problem would be solved before I needed to start class. Unfortunately I do not remember their names :(
The VCR in Poe 224 needs to be fixed. Also, I put in a request to teach in a classtech room (in Poe Hall) for the spring '08 semester (for both courses that I teach), but was not assigned to a classtech room for either course. Why?
Used Clickers and Classroom capture this semester (had trouble with classroom capture at times but was in beta)
Very good overall. Bostian 3712 suffers from the mysterious microphone controls (as noted above) and bad lighting (terrible actually - too dark).
would be good to get webcams. could do distance learning, collaborative work in our international programs more easily.
