Spring 2005 LITRE ClassTech Faculty User Survey

Thanks for your participation in this important survey. Please answer the questions below
and feel free to add comments as appropriate.

According to our records, you are teaching in a ClassTech classroom. These rooms are equipped with basic electronic instructional technology, such as:

  • Ceiling-mounted data projector
  • Built-in computer
  • Laptop inputs (video, data and power connections)
  • Document camera (aka Elmo or visual presenter)
  • DVD/VCR player
  • Wireless microphone, available in larger rooms
  • Lectern-mounted technology control panel

1.  In which ClassTech room(s) did you teach during Spring? Please check all that apply.
(Other rooms on campus also contain this kind of technology, but are not included in this survey because they are not supported by the ClassTech unit.)

1b. For the purposes of this survey, we would like you to think about a particular course you are currently teaching in one of the ClassTech rooms above. Please indicate the course number (e.g. ST 507).

2. Thinking about this course, prior to this semester, how many times had you taught it in any classroom that had electronic instructional technology permanently installed and available?

3. How many times have you taught this course in a room without electronic instructional technology permanently installed in the room?

4. When did you become aware this classroom had technology permanently installed and available for use?

5. Which of the following applies to you? (Please mark all that apply.)

Attended ClassTech Open House prior to the start of a semester

9b. Comments about importance of having technologies available:

10. Please provide your best example of how you used an instructional technology tool in this class.

What instructional
technology tool
did you use?
What did you do
with this tool?
What did students
learn as a result?

Example:
Lectern PC connected to the Internet

Example:
Used simulation software available on a web site to show graphical representation of linear correlation.
Example:
Students were able to better visualize how changes in the distribution of data altered correlation coefficient. As a result they gained a deeper understanding of its meaning compared to just using a formula.

11. The following questions ask about some specific ways that teaching this course with electronic instructional technology differs from teaching it without the technology. If you have never taught this course without technology, please think about how it might differ.
a. How does the pace of this course in a ClassTech room compare to the same or similar course taught without instructional technology?

b. How does the variety of topics covered in this course in a ClassTech room compare to the same or similar course taught in a room without instructional technology?

c. How does the depth of the material covered in this course in a ClassTech room compare to the same or similar course taught in a room without instructional technology?

d. How much are your students involved in the learning process in this course compared to the same or similar course taught without instructional technology?

e. Please provide examples of how your students are more or less involved in the learning process in this course.

12.
Is there equipment that you bring in or that is not currently available in ClassTech rooms
that you would use if it were available? If so, please describe.

13. Do you encourage students to bring their computers or PDAs to use in class?

14. About what percentage of students have ever brought a computer or PDA to use in this class?

15.
Did you ever find the equipment provided in the ClassTech room was not functioning when you wanted to use it?

16.  How often did you seek assistance from any of these sources for help in the ClassTech room? If you ever sought assistance from a given source, please rate your overall satisfaction with the help your received.

Sources of help

Frequency Satisfaction Level

ClassTech or NCSU HelpDesk staff

A student in the class

A departmental staff member or colleague

Someone other than those listed above

16b. Do you have any suggestions for ways to improve the support provided for this ClassTech room?

17.
If we develop training sessions on effective practices using these technologies,
how likely is it that you would attend?

18.  To support our efforts to develop effective practice resources,
would you be willing to be contacted for follow up on how you used the equipment?

19.  May we contact you about participating in a more in-depth study of the effectiveness of using
technology for teaching and learning? (Participants will be guaranteed use of a ClassTech room
while participating in the study.)

20.  Please provide any other comments you have about ClassTech rooms,
their support, or classroom technology in general.
