Spring 2007 Survey

Comments from "How often did you or students in your class use the equipment in the ClassTech room? How important are these technologies?"

I have no need for a microphone, personally, or for laptop inputs. I find it easier to carry a memory stick than a computer to class. I use everything else regularly. In the future, I anticipate using the pc more than the doc cam.
The computer with access to web services was very helpful from time to time.
The computer and Audio-visual equipment are an essential and productive part of the class instruction.
Excellent classroom tools. Everything worked perfectly. Thanks!
these technologies were a great time saving device for me. by being available i was more likely to plan on using them in my lectures. thank you.
Either a lectern computer or a laptop hookup is essential to my teaching, for showing prepared slides and for demonstrating statistical methods.
these technology become integral part of my course and greatly enhance the students learning experience
I think the document camera was fantastic
It is nice to have all the technology at our fingertips... it helps with student attention span .. I can deliver lecture while catering to several learning styles.
having doc camera was nice since it allowed impromptu graphics
Though I use the computer for other things, I've found it to be very important in that the DVD player only plays about half the DVDs I try to show. The other half I have to show with the computer. A better DVD player would lessen the need for a computer.
Other courses and guest lectures may use VCR/DVD player or transparency projectors, so I would not get rid of them because I did not use them in the present course.
It is my opinion that ALL classrooms should be ClassTech rooms or should be equipped with these technologies. I can't teach without them. My students can't do their class presentations without them. Furthermore, they're conveniently located in the classroom and much easier to use than the Tech Carts one has to reserve, then wheel into the classroom, set up for classroom use and then wheel back to the Computer Lab.
I would use the computer at the lectern if the audience response software I use (TurningPoint Technologies) could be installed on it. Right now, I have to bring my own laptop to class, which is cumbersome.
The biggest hindrance is still reliability. In the 40-some days I had lecture, the equipment was unavailable 3 times. While that is not a large percentage, it was enough that I had to continually prepare contingency plans. Twice I could use my laptop, but the other time there was no alternative other than using the blackboard/overhead.
I can manage without these--IF I have adequate prior notice that allows me to prepare alternate ways of presenting material. However, all of my lesson plans make use of visual aids projected onscreen & I really need to be able to count on these systems being up & working on a daily basis.
Technologies added to the classroom experience significantly.
There was not an overhead transparency projector in the classroom. Although I would have used one if one was available (I have transparencies for teaching the course in a different classroom), the document camera served the same purpose.
The technologies are critical since I rely on them as teaching aides and my students depend on them for their oral presentations. I don't have any smart classrooms this Spring and that will be an ordeal for me to wheel in the portable carts countless times for student use.
I teach in both DCL 101 and DCL 102 and I schedule seminar speakers for the Department of Zoology, again using DCL 101. I am answering these questions for all 3 of these activities.
I feel as though I haven't yet had time to think about ways to use them.
Although I may not have used all of the available resources, it was nice to know that they were there. If guest speakers come or I make instructional changes it is nice to know that I have many technological options.
They are all absolutely necessary for me to be effective as an instructor.
I was very pleased that everything worked so well, and that I never had to call for help.
Could envision using the other items but have not thus far.
I could not teach my class without them.
The wireless microphone was used to assist a hearing-impaired student to take the course.
It was extremely useful to be able to switch between powerpoint, a DVD clip, and the internet with minimal set-up time or technical difficulties.
All of the technologies are great to have, even though I dod not use some of them this semester. I use the computer for Powerpoint presentations every class and often use the web for my classes. I also use the VCR/DVD frequently.
I find the document projector essential to my lectures. Allows writing lecture and showing figures from textbook and other sources.
The laptop projection and sound system are now *REQUIRED* for me to teach effectively. There is no going back ....
It would be great if the Document Camera could project colors!
I rely on my laptop and its connections to the screen. If I didn't use the laptop, then the in room computer would be essential.
I used Elluminate because some of the students in my class were Distance Ed students at various sites along the NC coast. I installed the software on my laptop and used the laptop to deliver all the lectures.
Powerpoint, video, and web have all become integral parts of my teaching style. It is so much better than just a board or overhead projector!
It would be very difficult to teach the course I do without these technologies.
I was in the social science lab in Winston, not sure of the classroom number. Computer and doc camera are must-haves. The doc camera has probably saved our dept $1,000 because we no longer need to make overhead transparencies. Projector had problems but TA was able to fix.
Having the computer, projection system and web access was vital to providing course content to the class.
Even though I might not have used the VCR or DVD player this semester it is very good that those are available. I might use them in future classes. The laptop input is also important as a backup. I had one class where the computer did not work and was able to teach with my laptop without problem. Or I might have special software that is not available on the provided computer.
The course is very dependent on technology and when equipment does not work it really affects the class negatively.
ClassTech fits my teaching style perfectly and allows me to enrich my lessons visually. I teach about current environmental topics, so being able to show video, web sites and online map views brings it to life, and is especially helpful in a large class.
This technology made it much easier to teach in general. It also allowed me to use interactive teaching techniques that I could not have used without it.
I cannot imagine teaching my course in its current configuration without access to these technologies.
The technologies that I used were extremely valuable to my course
Every day I could put online material, from syllabus to quiz to student work, on the screen for all to see. Made for a very interactive, dynamic syllabus and made it so easy to add or change material on the fly. I especially liked the bundle of input cords, because I was able to plug my ipod, with recorded poems on it, directly into the 1/8" mini jack. Great addition. The desktop and projector combo worked great all term; the document camera sometimes lost the input when switching between input options on the console. The speakers were strong but stereo output was sporadic.
I thoroughly enjoyed using the technology available in Fox 104; however, I was late getting started because of a glitch in password identification. When I had difficulty with the system, your assistance was swift and invaluable.
Equipped classrooms have allowed me to improve the way I deliver instruction to my students.
This was an amazing classroom - it had everything and was easy to use.
I think that you are aware of the problems with the Audio system in Dab 220. Although I did not use the laptop, I have colleagues who would only use it. Currently I have no reason to use the VCR/DVD player, but I like knowing that it is available if the need should arise.
One of the major learning objectives of my course is the development of listening comprehension in French and to this end I make extensive use of target-language clips on DVD and streaming media from the Internet. My grammar presentations are typically done in PowerPoint (to make most efficient use of class time). I use the document camera to project objects, stimulus and realia for my oral or written warm-ups at the beginning of each class period.
Very disappointing service from the classtech to make some of the essential equipment obsolete.
It makes teaching my course much easier.
