Spring 2008 Survey

"Do you have any comments concerning the difficulty or ease of using ClassTech rooms ?"

A major problem I faced was that often the mouse was disconnected from the power source and have to wait a while before it starts working.
At the beginning, the video switcher would stick on or off, but that was fixed in a few weeks.
ClassTech rooms are very easy to use and I have found that all components are almost always in working order.
Compared to what I've seen in other schools, these are fairly straightforward and well designed.
Early in the semester there were two or three mornings that i had to call in for assistance in starting the desktop and projector. Also, the projector acted up a few days until it was changed.
easy to use
Easy to use the equipment that I use
Easy to use.
Easy to use.
EASY!
Every thing worked well in Rm 158 this semester. There is a problem with the PC in Weaver 125...too slow for ProEngineer usage due to lack of memory or too much loaded etc?
everyone seems to work differently
For this class, I mainly used the chalkboard. It was difficult for the students to see the chalkboard due to the computer monitor. It was difficult to lower it so that it wasn't in the way. Also, because of the electrical connections to the equipment, the desk blocked part of the chalkboard, making it difficult to write in that location and it was annoying to have to walk around the desk when I would go back and forth between the sides. So, while I enjoy having technology in the classroom, it should not disrupt "regular" chalkboard teaching.
Found ClassTech rooms very intuitive and easy to use.
Generally ClassTech gets my strongest approval. The only negative point would be housekeeping/maintenance of the equipment. As the semester wore on, wires got everywhere, mice got moved etc.
Generally used the in-class computer; though I have a laptop I don't like lugging it around in all kinds of weather. I did not know I could save files somewhere. I brought my Power Points on a CD rom or flash drive. I would log in to access Windows Media Player too.
Generally, it it fairly easy.
Good
Help was great. I was able to get help quickly and my course was not interrupted.
I am new to NCSU after a decade at another state university (non-NC) and find the technical support at NCSU astounding.
I find it very easy to use the classes in Withers.
I find the classtech set-up much, much more convenient than setting up my own laptop.
I had difficulty using my USB drive -- is that because I have a mac and was trying to use it on a PC in the tech classroom?
I have been happy with the room.
I need a web cam and there are none available. The conferences rooms in cential campus have them but I can't find one on campus....
I need table space at the front of the classroom, primarily for setting up demonstrations, but also just for passing back paper. The extra wheeled unit I arranged for was barely adequate.
I think that the brightness of the doc cam in EB1 Room 2005 is still not as gfood as it could be. You had some people come and check this but I stll think it should be improved more.
I think the Classtech rooms are easy to use.
I think the new control panels are a big improvement. I had a few problems getting used to the change (for instance, the tricky volume controls that lowers itself
I wish the document camera in BR 3216 did not shut down after one hour. My classes are 75 to 90 minutes long.
I would have used classroom capture everyday if it worked. I was hoping to record over 12 lectures. The link only worked for 3 of the lectures and even those lectures are not usable. The Department IT guys were very good about checking the equipment with me to make sure it worked 1-2 days before class. Often, the day of class capture was no longer working.
I'm glad you put a phone in Bostian 3712
In Caldwell G-108, when I use the DVD player, the system automatically shuts down after 30 minutes. The DVD player would continue to project the picture, but the sound would disappear; I would have to turn the console back on, then wait for it to come back to life, missing about 1-2 minutes or more of the dvd. And of course you can't back up and cover what you've missed.
In Riddick Rm 339, the wall mounted control did not control the VHS player.
Increasingly less difficult, and when there is ClassTech is always quick to respond. Occasionally, when I forget "log off" and "shut down" instead, the computer sems to go wild!
Introduce more if guaranteed such a classroom (and it is maintained). Transfered VHS to DVD (of course, university services botched this too)

It all was quite easy really. Just a few minor glitches.
It is great to have all of this avaailable, but for my teaching of physics classes, it really gets in the way. I need the lab bench for demos, and most of the time I have to move things to make room. Couldn't we get the computer screen flush with the bench as it is in some classrooms I've seen. And couldn't the document camera and transparency projector be stored under the bench and somehow swing into position when needed? This would help all classrooms in Riddick be more useful.
It is not at all clear how to reboot the computer. A technician was called into my class twice this semester. Once he opened up something in a locked cabinet to boot the computer. The other time he apparently got it booted without opening the cabinet, but I did not see a button for doing that.
It would be helpful to add another ethernet port on the desk top for times when another device is needed for class. When I needed another port during the semester I had to bring in a hub.
I've learned to use the items that I need - very easy now.
Never used one before, but the setup was intuitive. I am a tech savy user, however.
No significant problems
no...have become very easy to use
None
Once I had it explained, it was easy.
Only to note that, b/c the lectures were taped, there was an A/V operator present for each taping, which made it very easy to get help if there was a problem. In question 8 below, the operators are who I refer to as "Someone other than..."
Operation of the equipment is straightforward. The only issue I've really had is occasional problems with logging into the computer using my Unity ID. This has been a problem in many of the classrooms at BTEC, but I believe that it was recently resolved.
Problems arise if settings are changed on the computer by someone else. For example, Firefox could no longer be used at some point.
See my comment about about CAL 212. Also, it appears that there are few ClassTech people available to come to the classroom when problems arise--if the university is going to assign us ClassTech rooms for 6pm classes, then it needs to provide support *between 6 and 9* for these courses,
Sight lines could be improved. Monitors often impede class view of the marker board.
THANKS!
The control panel was easy to use (particularly if you actually read the instructions!) What I didn't like is the classroom layout (stadium seating) because it's difficult to point out items on the screen without moving up the stairs. Obviously that has nothing to do with the technology itself.
The document scanner in this room is broken. I submitted a repair request but it was not fixed. The zoom will not hold, it drifts. I use doc cams alot and I have never seen one act like this. Please replace the machine in this room.
The intro session before the semester began was great.
The lecturn is littered with equipment that makes it VERY DIFFICULT to use this space for other things such as classroom demos. It would be best if everything were beneath the plane of the lectern so that I could use all of the space for my own purposes. See-through windows for the computer and pull-out trays for keyboards would be a big help. Storing the document camera beneath the surface would also help. Basically I like ClassTEch equipment, but if sure gets in the way of my teaching. Also, the computer screen is in the sight line for students in the front of the class who can't see the bottom of the white board. So, please take your stuff and hide it!
The light switches are generally incomprehensible. Should at least be labelled.
The lighting is problematic in this room. It's hard to get the lights down low enough to see the screen, but not so dark that it's hard to see each other. It would help if the projector was brighter.
The most difficult part was getting the screen to retract.
the one device to give me sporadic rouble this time round was the touchscreen projector link. sometimes I had to power down and wait the reboot before the projector would recognize the feed, esp. if someone before me forgot to logout The device that's least intuitive is the power switch on the doc camera. I at first took red light to mean on, when you instead have to push it to get green for it to turn on the lamp. Easy now, but a pain before I knew the trick. Just put a sign right on the side by the power switch.
The overhead projector had a few problems early in the semester; I quit using it and used the white boards for the rest of the semester.
The room is easy to use with only a little training.
The room was easy to use
The screen needs to be moved away from the whiteboard.
The set up is pretty intuitive so it is relatively easy to use.
The technology was usually relatively easy to use; though we occasionally had trouble playing sound and music from a website
The white board in that class was too small. The monitor on the desk in the front of the room obstructed some student's view of the board. They complained to me about it.
The wireless microphone went off after a while if I didn't use the computer and let the panel idle. Then I had to restart the projector to "activate" the microphone.
There needs to be better instructions right in the classroom - a cheat sheet that you can refer to instead of having to call for assistance - perhaps a FAQ sheet.
There was a short learning curve, but I found the ClassTech resources to be fairly easy to use.
They are eassy to use when the equipment is working. Several times during the semester, couldn't login or get out to the web
They are great. please keep up the good work, and thank you!
This is speaking to the equipment in RD 301 only. The control to raise/lower the screen is located behind the screen. I have to push the screen out to walk behind it to raise it up when finished. The class before me uses the screen daily and I have to push the screen out, walk behind and raise it daily. This has to be causing wear and tear on the screen and will soon cause failure I am certain. I really think this control needs to be moved.
Until the computer was updated at the beginning of the semester it locked up several times during use. Evidently it had been neglected through several iterations of routine maintenance. Once I noted the problems, it was corrected.
very easy !

Very easy to use
Very easy to use
Very easy to use.
Very easy to use. Help was there very quickly when needed.
Very easy to use. I wish I'd had such a classroom 20 years ago when I first started taching at NC State!
Very user friendly even for someone who has limited experience. When I needed Tech support, the technician was able to talk me through the process over the phone.
We continue to have sight-line issues in Riddick 321. The lower quarter of the projection screen is too low to be seen by students near the back of the room, because the slope of the floor is too gentle. You can't fix that, but mounting the screen higher would help.
Well set up
windows is still problematic (as usual)
